Harper moves on in Region IV tourney

The Harper College softball team opened NJCAA Divsion III, Region IV tournament play Tuesday afternoon against visiting Madison Area Technical College.

The Hawks swept the Wolfpack 6-3 and 9-8 in eight innings, ousting them in the tourney’s double-elimination format.

In Game 1, Harper ace Julianne Waite (Conant) was the star. She carried a no hitter into the seventh inning. Aly Poehlmann (Schaumburg) and Samantha Bernstein (Crystal Lake South) both had homers.

The second game proved more difficult as the Wolfpack jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against Waite.

Bernstein had a triple and 1 of Harper’s 3 home runs.

Meghan Keany (Streamwood) led off the eighth inning with a single. Aly Poehlemann (Schaumburg) singled, giving the Hawks runners on the corners and one out. Stephanie Bynes (Conant) delivered a game winning 3-run home run to seal the victory.

Casey Fitzpatrick (St. Viator) earned the win in relief.

The Hawks play their next game Friday at Joliet Junior College against No. 1-ranked College of DuPage. The Chaparrals swept a doubleheader against Harper last week.
