Basketball: Week 2 MVPs

Amanda Hilton of St. Charles East and Christian Spandiary of Schaumburg have earned the Daily Herald’s nod as high school basketball MVPs for their performances in the second installment of the award this season.
Girls MVPAmanda Hilton, St. Charles East: A sophomore point guard, Hilton directed the Saints to wins in their first two Upstate Eight Conference River Division games last week. After tying for scoring honors with 17 points in a 63-42 win over Streamwood, Hilton led all scorers with 21 points in St. Charles East#146;s 61-48 victory at Batavia.
Girls runners-upKendall Detweiler, Grayslake North: Last season#146;s state runner-up in the Class 3A three-point contest downstate hasn#146;t lost her touch from long range. The 5-foot-3 sophomore sank a school-record seven 3-pointers, scoring 27 points in a 57-41 win at Jacobs. She followed up with 10 points as the Knights won their fourth straight, 39-36 over Woodstock North.
Carlin Faulkner, Dundee-Crown: Dundee-Crown#146;s 5-foot-3 senior guard helped her team to two straight wins, scoring 11 points with three 3-pointers in a 47-36 win over Grant, and then coming back with 17 points including four 3-pointers in a 34-32 triumph over Johnsburg.
Amanda Hoye, Maine West: The 5-foot-6 Hoye set career highs for scoring (26 points) and rebounding (10 boards) while helping Maine West move into first place in the Central Suburban North with a 53-25 victory over visiting Deerfield. The senior point guard also handed out 5 assists and connected on 4-of-8 shots from 3-point range.
Kelly Urban, Lisle: The Lions#146; junior guard has come back from two ACL tears to key a 7-2 start to the season. Urban was instrumental in Lisle#146;s rally from 15 down at Wheaton Academy, scoring 24 points #8212; 10 in the fourth quarter #8212; with 6 rebounds and 2 steals in 48-43 road win. Urban then had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals as Lions beat Herscher 45-27.
Boys MVPChristian Spandiary, Schaumburg: It was a can#146;t-miss weekend as Spandiary erupted for 31 and 27 points in wins over Fremd and Prospect. The 6-foot-2 senior made 84 percent of all of his shots (21-for-25 field goals, 5-for-7 on 3-pointers, 11-for-12 free throws), had 5 rebounds and 3 steals and drew 2 charging fouls against Prospect.
Boys runners-upMike Fleming, Stevenson: Gotta like Mike. The senior#146;s play has keyed the Patriots#146; 5-1 start, which includes a 44-43 win over defending Class 4A state runner-up Warren. The 6-foot guard scored 16 points in that win #8212;the Patriots#146; fourth straight #8212; after pouring in 27 in a 67-59 victory over Zion-Benton.
Quantice Hunter, Larkin: This 6-foot-1 junior guard scored 6 of his team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter of a 62-53 Upstate Eight Conference crossover victory at previously undefeated Bartlett (4-1). Hunter sank three 3-pointers, made 3 steals and grabbed 5 rebounds to help the Royals improve to 5-0, already 1 win better than their 4-23 finish in 2010-11.
Brendan Leahy, Geneva: Perhaps no one but Geneva#146;s coaching staff and players would have given the Vikings a chance last Friday against unbeaten Upstate Eight Conference River Division foe Elgin. Geneva won, however, 66-64 in triple-overtime. Leahy, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, led the Vikings with a game-high 22 points, plus 8 rebounds.
Dominique Spencer, Lake Park: Pacing the Lancers to a 6-1 record, the 6-foot-4 senior forward scored 53 points in three victories last week. A three-year starter, Spencer scored 19 points in a 46-41 win over Schaumburg; 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in a 49-37 win over Neuqua Valley; and 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists to help beat East Aurora 51-36.
