Softball/Fox Valley roundup

It turned cold and wet in Ashland, Ohio on Saturday but Bartlett’s softball team had its red-hot bats going.

After losing 5-1 to nationally-ranked Keystone on Friday, Bartlett came out Saturday and beat Ashland 9-1 and Tallmadge 8-0 to finish 2-1 in the Wendt’s Spring Classic.

“We put pressure on both teams and forced them to play at our tempo,” said Hawks’ coach Jim Wolfsmith. “We executed and it was a good day.”

Against Ashland, Amanda Montbriand ran her record to 5-0 with a 3-hitter that included 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. Kaylyn Zierke went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Tori Burke had a double and an RBI for the Hawks.

In the second game, Burke (8-3) pitched 3 innings of 1-hit softball and Alicia Salata allowed just 1 hit in 2 innings of relief. Zierke had a double and an RBI for Bartlett (15-3) and Alex Morales tripled in a run.

Cary-Grove 3-0 at Woodstock: Sara Markelonis (2-for-5) doubled in 2 runs in the top of the 11th inning and Lindsay Efflandt pitched a complete game with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk as Cary-Grove beat Conant 2-1 in the opening game of the Woodstock tournament, the Trojans’ second win this season over Conant. Cary-Grove then rolled to wins of 13-5 over Belvidere North and 9-0 over Harvard. Laura Stanley picked up the win over Belvidere North and Sam Bacchi beat Harvard. Sarah Leudo was 4-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in the North game, and Jaime Deering was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles. Against Harvard, Leudo was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double, Ellen Celske went 2-for-2 and Rebecca Lowe had a double for the Trojans (17-4).

Jacobs splits: After losing Game 1 to Fremd 10-0, Jacobs came back and beat the Vikings 2-1 in 10 innings as Golden Eagles’ coach Jeremy Bauer won his 199th career game. Katie Kirker pitched 8 innings in Game 2, striking out 7 and allowing 4 hits. Tori Berg picked up the win in relief when Jacquelyne Hedger scored on an outfield error in the top of the 10th. Nicky Chapa and Hengler each had 2 hits for Jacobs (11-9) in the win. Chapa was 2-for-2 with a double in Game 1 and McKayla Lein took the loss.

Westminster loses 2: Rachel Fugiel had 2 hits with a home run and 3 RBI in Game 1 and Liz Farwell was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI in Game 2 but Westminster lost both ends to IMSA, 7-3 and 9-5. Fugiel suffered the pitching loss in both games. Ally Heischler added a double for the Warriors (5-3) in Game 1 and Mikaela Dahlman was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple in Game 2.

Batavia sweeps St. Edward: Kristi Kroll had a double in Game and Julie Larson drove in a run, and Maddie Kerr has a double and 2 RBI in Game 2 as St. Edward fell to Batavia in nonconference action 13-2 and 19-8. Kroll, Ryan Scully, Larson and Kali Kossakowski each had RBI in Game 2 for the Green Wave (4-13). Larson and Morgin Coughlin suffered the pitching losses.

CL South at Woodstock: The Gators went 2-1 at the Woodstock tournament, beating Belvidere North 6-2 and Harvard 11-1 but losing to Conant11-0. Liz Adams went 3-for-4 with a home run against Belvidere North and Hailee Massie struck out 7 and threw a 1-hitter for the win. Against Harvard, Heather Eck struck out 5, walked 1 and allowed 4 hits to earn the win for CLS. Adams (2-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI), Sam McQueen (2-for-4, 2B, 3B, RBI), Taylor Doppke (2B, RBI) and Jenica Terry (2-for-4, RBI) led the offense. Massie suffered the loss against Conant as the Cougars’ Bri Cavin no-hit CL South (14-5).
