Baseball/Fox Valley roundup

Jake Buhman and Andrew Weedman each hit home runs Friday as South Elgin’s surging baseball team scored another Upstate Eight victory, finishing the “River Tour” with a 5-4 win over Batavia.

Buhman went 2-foe-2 in the game for the Storm (8-2, 5-1) and Ryan Ford was 2-for-4 with a triple.

Alex Wolfe picked up his first win of the year on the mound, going 5 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 earned runs and 2 strikeouts. Jake Hicks earned the save.

South Elgin will begin UEC Valley play Tuesday at East Aurora.

Crystal Lake South 14, Grayslake North 0 (5 inns.): The Gators (11-6, 3-1) wasted little time as they jumped to an early 7-0 lead after 1 inning of play and continued to shut out Grayslake North in 5 innings in this Fox Valley Conference game. Jake Bigos recorded a big day at the plate as he was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and 2 RBI while Tyler Salm (2-for-3), Jake Byron (2-for-3), and Nick Martin each knocked in 2 runs. Zack Geib (4-2) earned the complete-game shutout as he allowed just 2 hits while striking out 4.

Grayslake Central 9, Jacobs 3: The Golden Eagles tried to mount a comeback as they scored 2 of their 3 runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but they fell short in Fox Valley Conference action. Mark Self (2-for-4, double, run) recorded the Eagles’ only multihit game while Greg Sidor, Conor Conzelman, and Ryan Ulmer each recorded an RBI. Max Rider suffered the loss going 2 innings and allowed 7 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts.

Huntley 3, Aurora Christian 2 (8 inns.): Brandon King came through in the clutch for the Red Raiders (9-5) as he drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a pinch hit single to secure the victory. Nick Corpolongo (2-for-4, run) and Jordan Chuipek (2-for-3, double) combined for 4 of the Red Raiders 8 hits to pace the offense. Justin Gundlach (2-1) pitched the final 2 innings for the victory as he allowed just 1 hit and struck out 2 batters.

Cary-Grove 17, Woodstock 5 (6 inns.): Jeremy Vasquez (2 RBI) and Nick Beyer (4 RBI) each blasted home runs to lead the Trojans (9-6) to a decisive Fox Valley Conference crossover victory. Matt Dunlap (2-1) earned the victory on the mound as he went 5 innings with 4 hits, 6 walks, and 8 strikeouts.

Waubonsie Valley 1, Elgin 0: The Maroons (4-9, 0-6) were unable to get on the board as they fell to the Warriors in Upstate Eight Conference action. Eric Daly (0-3) threw a complete-game and earned the tough luck loss as he struck out 5 and allowed just 2 hits.

Lisle 6, Westminster Christian 3: The Warriors (8-6) fell short in this nonconference game against Lisle at home. Ryan Perez led the way offensively with a double and 2 RBI while Will Woodhouse also recorded a double. Zach Edwards suffered the loss in 5 innings of work.

College baseball

Indiana University-Southeast 9, Judson University 4: Nick Norris (2 RBI) recorded his first home run of the season and Elliot Bajda also recorded 2 RBI, but the Eagles fell short in Friday’s nonconference game. Chris Simon took the loss for the Eagles going 3 innings and giving up 3 runs.
