Award-winning Harper speech team part of Comedy Night on Wednesday

The Harper College Speech and Debate Team has added another notch to its state championship belt.

The squad nabbed the top spot among community colleges at the recent Illinois Intercollegiate Speech and Debate Tournament in Peoria — its seventh such title in the last 16 seasons.

Nearly two dozen colleges and universities competed at the event.

“We knew they could do it,” said Jeff Przybylo, head coach and professor. “We are so proud of this team's competitive accomplishments already this year. Our members have evolved into tremendous communicators and leaders.”

The team produced one first-place finish and seven second-place finishes at the meet's events.

Harper's squad has a history of success, and took third place — the best performance in team history — at least year's Phi Rho Pi community college nationals.

Members will perform for the public in the team's annual Comedy Night at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the Drama Lab, Room L109, Building L on Harper's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine.

They will perform again at the traditional Night Before Nationals event at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 in the College's Performing Arts Center. Tickets for both events are $6 for general admission. Call (847) 925-6100 or visit harpercollege.edu/boxoffice.
