Antioch tops R-B for regional title
Regional wrestling host Antioch edged Richmond-Burton 172-160.5 in Class 2A competition Saturday to earn a spot in the dual team sectional.
Antioch had champions at 126 (Mike Gussarson), 145 (George Gonzalez) and 170 (Zach Epker). The Sequoits also had individual sectional qualifiers at 106 (Briley Schultz, 2nd), 113 (Pat Unida, 3rd), 132 (Mike Morales, 2nd), 138 (Johnny Denikas, 3rd), 152 (Zach Keller, 2nd), 182 (Zach Freundt, 3rd) and 195 (Teddy Montemayor, 2nd).
Grayslake Central had champs in Joey Valdivia (195) and Jimmy Molitor (220). Also advancing for the Rams, who finished third in the team race at 110.5, were Sean Keever (2nd at 138), Dylan Hay (2nd at 145), Chris Wollmuth (3rd at 152) and Jordan Swoopes (3rd at 170).
Grayslake North (fourth, 107 points) didn’t have a champion but advanced Angel Cabrera (3rd at 120), Aaron Hoover (3rd at 145), Andrew Soulis (2nd at 170), Jimmy Prince (2nd at 182), Zach Young (3rd at 220) and Kasen Christensen (2nd at 285).
Carmel had winners in Dom Panico at 113 pounds and Jake Cochrane at 285; the Corsairs also advanced Joe Salvi (3rd at 126) and Steve Alvarado (2nd at 220).
Lakes got titles from Jose Collado at 132 and Tyler Booth at 152 and also advanced Levi Smith (2nd at 120) and David Gregory (2nd at 160).
Class 2A at Marengo: Crystal Lake Central had six champions and rolled to the team title with 220 points, besting second-place Wauconda (147.5) and third-place Vernon Hills (141) to earn a spot in the dual team series.
Wauconda’s only champion was Devin Tortorice at 120, but the Bulldogs also advanced Tyler Holt (third at 132), Bruce Pearl (second at 145), Alex Schwickrath (third at 160), Josh Conour (third at 170), Nate Mageria (second at 195), Jake Sherman (third at 220) and Max Mattalaino (third at 285).
Vernon Hills had a winner at 285 in Jeremy Brazil and had sectional qualifiers in Jordan Reich (second at 106), Brea Cruz (third at 113), Patrick Conrad (second at 120), Felipe Vasquez (second at 126), Jacob Hallendorf (third at 138), Dan Klema (third at 152) and Tim Claussen (third at 195).
St. Viator senior Elliot Hilgert advanced with a third-place finish at 145; the Lions have an alternate at 182, where Joseph Bansfield finished fourth.
Class 3A at Glenbrook South: New Trier took top honors with 207.5 points at the Class 3A Glenbrook South wrestling sectional, where Mid-Suburban League teams earned their fair share of individual sectional qualifiers.
Prospect (154.5) finished second, followed by Wheeling (125) and Hersey (115.5) in the eight-team field.
The Knights had two champions: Jon Bilancia decisioned Hersey’s Deon Rice 5-3 at 195, and Max Treviline won by a 14-4 major decision against New Trier’s John Benson at 220. The Knights’ other sectional qualifiers were Sam Lobono (2nd at 106), Joe Benway (3rd at 113), Joe Abu-Bakr (3rd at 132), Harry Hamilton (2nd at 138), Adrian Wroblewski (3rd at 145), Mike Etchingham (2nd at 170), Dan Fiumetto (2nd at 182) and Oluwashola George (3rd at 285).
Hersey’s Stephfon Scales earned a 10-7 decision over New Trier’s Chris Alcock at 120, Conrad Bugay edged Fremd’s Ronnie Hauser 4-3 for the title at 132 and Hunter Rollins decisioned Paul Papoutsis 10-7 at 160. Matt Korff also advanced with a third-place finish at 152, along with Rice at 195.
Wheeling had a pair of champions — Eddie Scanlon at 170 and Igor Romanowski at 285. Leo Giordano also advanced to sectional with a second-place finish at 152.
Fremd’s Tim Divizio will join Hauser in sectional action after finishing second at 126; he fell 8-7 to Glenbrook South’s Cort Ro in the championship match.
