MSL roundup: Barrington tops Elk Grove in OT

After bobbling the snap on third down in overtime, Barrington quarterback Matt LeMire regained his composure to score a touchdown that gave the Broncos (2-0) a thrilling 30-23 Mid-Suburban League crossover win at Elk Grove.

The Grenadiers Matt Brandt had tied the game at 23-23 on a 31-yard field goal with 2.2 seconds left in regulation.

Quarterback Nick Meyer, who completed 20 of 39 passes for 234 yards with 2 TDs and 3 interceptions, had his second-down pass intercepted by Broncos safety Rob Wagner.

Meyer also rushed for 134 yards for Elk Grove (1-1).

Prospect 28, Fremd 14: If anyone was wondering whether Prospect would bounce back from its disheartening loss in week one, the Knights answered assertively Friday night at home in an MSL crossover against Fremd.

With Peter Bonahoom exploding for 195 yards and 2 TDs, plus an interception among 4 Knight takeaways, Prospect scored a resounding 28-14 win that was as lopsided statistically as it was physically and on the scoreboard.

Prospect improved to 1-1 and avoided its first 0-2 start in 14 years while Fremd dropped to 0-2 for the first time since 1990.

Schaumburg 28, BG 6: Schaumburg rolled up more than 500 yards on offense and limited visiting Buffalo Grove to a single touchdown and just 10 yards rushing Friday in the MSL crossover game. The Saxons were led by running back Shepard Little, who rushed for 331 yards and a pair of second-half touchdoswns on 31 carries.

Schaumburg quarterback Mark Iannotti had his hands in both first-half touchdowns, rushing 19 yards for a score with 1:28 left in the first quarter and finding Matt Bolger for a 34-yard touchdown with 6:58 left in the half. He rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries and completed 10 of 13 passes for 98 yards.

BG (1-1) got on the board with 3:52 left in the first half when Mike Garrity connected with Kevin Tennenbaum on a 7-yard scoring pass. That was all the Bison could muster, as the Schaumburg defense limited them to just 127 total yards.

Palatine 28, Meadows 12: Palatine (1-1) scored off 3 of 5 turnovers by visiting Rolling Meadows (1-1) - including both of its third-quarter touchdowns - for the MSL crossover victory.

Palatine quarterback Cody Bobbit (14-for-19 passing, 129 yards) rushed for 2 touchdowns and threw a 9-yard score to Dan Haze for a 28-12 lead with 1:02 left in the third. Jim Smearman rushed for 122 yards on 28 carries and a 19-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

Meadows got within 14-12 at halftime on quarterback Kevin Cwynar's 2-yard touchdown run and 20-yard touchdown pass to Artie Checchin. Jesse Bobbit and Rory Fritz had interceptions for Palatine.

Conant 13, Wheeling 10: Conant stormed back from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat visiting Wheeling 13-10 in a hard-fought MSL crossover.

First Cougars quarterback Matt Cullen scored from 5 yards, then senior London Dokubo electrified the crowd with a 58-yard punt return late in the fourth quarter to put Conant on top.

The Cougar defense made a goal-line stand in the final minute to lift the home team to victory.

Cordell Clark rushed 17 times for 82 yards for Conant (2-0), while Wheeling (1-1) quarterback Tyler Brady completed 27-of-43 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown.

Hersey 20, Hoffman 7: Hersey junior defensive back Jake Mueller recovered 3 fumbles and running back Zach Johnson broke through the Hoffman defense with 1:13 to play on a third-and-16 for a 39-yard touchdown run to ice the MSL crossover victory for the Huskies (2-0) over the visiting Hawks (0-2).

Hersey senior running back Chris Polinski had 18 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown. Johnson carried 3 times for 50 yards. Hersey junior quarterback Brad Zaucha was 10-for-14 passing for 81 yards.

For Hoffman, senior quarterback David Gutierrez rushed 16 times for 72 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run. Senior Paul Albani recorded 2 sacks.

St. Viator 28, Dunbar 20: St. Viator (2-0) roared out to a 28-0 second-quarter lead and hung on for the nonconference win over Dunbar (0-2) at Lane Tech in Chicago.

Frank Laterza had 2 interceptions and a 35-yard touchdown catch, Jimmy Menges had a pair of TD runs and Kyle Martin returned an interception 28 yards for a score. Viator starting quarterback Cameron Korab left the game with an injured ankle.
