Stevenson’s baseball team has been saving its best for last lately.
The Patriots won the North Suburban Conference championship game on Thursday against Wauconda by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
On Saturday in a 4-3 win over Cary-Grove, it was more late-game heroics for Stevenson. Extra late, actually.
The game had moved into the eighth inning, tied 2-2, and Cary-Grove took a 3-2 lead with a home run.
The Patriots got two straight outs in the bottom of the eighth but hung in there. They then calmly strung together 4 straight hits to pull out the victory. Jacob Sholl, Max Golembo, Ricky Kern and Steve Galanopoulos each had singles for Stevenson, which moves to 26-4 on the season.
Pitcher Blake Fiedelman got the win for the Patriots.
Lake Zurich 3, Evanston 2: Lake Zurich continues to stay hot.
The Bears have now won 10 of their last 13 games to move to 15-16 on the season.
“We have shown steady improvement over the last three weeks both at the plate and in the field,” Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon said. “We’re all having fun out there and that’s what it’s about.”
Pitcher Mike Schnur got the win, going 6 innings and giving up just 2 hits. He also had 3 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Bears got 2 hits out of Mitch Tuthill, Parker Asmann and Sean Eder. Asmann and Mark Dorfman each had doubles.
Vernon Hills 12, Reavis 7: Vernon Hills moves to 23-10 with the win, tying the school record for victories in a season.
The Cougars had to come from behind to get this victory. They got 10 straight quality plate appearances in the seventh inning to do so.
MJ Crowley, Brian Palmer, Austin Hagen, Tyler Coppney, Anthony Mazza and Steve Nelson all drove in runs in the inning.
Meanwhile, pitcher Ryan Lane got the win by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning and retiring three batters in a row in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Grayslake Central 9, Wauconda 6: Senior Austin Miller came up big on Senior Day.
The Grayslake Central shortstop fueled the Rams’ 12-hit attack with a triple, double and single.
Meanwhile, Jon Gurchak belted a home run for the Rams for the second consecutive day, and teammate Nick Passarella smacked 2 doubles and drove in 2 runs. Derek Idstein and Kristian Meehan each had 2 hits for the Rams as well.
On the mound, Mark Gawinski tossed the first four innings in picking up his sixth victory of the season.
The Rams finish the regular season with a 23-10 record.
Mundelein 5, Highland Park 3: The Mustangs pounded out 10 hits, including a triple and a double by Luis Carasco. Carasco also drove in 3 runs.
Mundelein moves to 26-6 on the season.
Antioch sweeps Marengo: Antioch got identical 10-0, five-inning wins over Marengo to move to 21-8 on the season.
In the first game, the Sequoits got 4 hits out of both Paul DeJong and Joe Gregory. Each had a double and Gregory also had a home run. He drove in 5 runs on the game. Greg Licht added 3 hits and 2 RBI for Antioch.
On the mound, Ryan Dragoon rolled up 7 strikeouts without a walk to move to 5-5. He also allowed only 2 hits.
In the second game, DeJong came up big at the plate again. He finished with 3 hits, including a home run.
Emery Paramski got the win on the mound. He racked up 7 strikeouts and gave up just 3 hits and no walks. He is 2-0 on the season.
Lakes sweeps Richmond-Burton: Lakes hit the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive season with two wins over Richmond-Burton: 4-3, 12-8.
The Eagles, who are now 20-13 on the season, were led by Paul Kukulka. He earned the save on the mound in the first game and then went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI in the second game.
Pitcher Jake Wisniewski picked up the win in the first game to move his record to 4-0 while Chris Hoffman won the second game and is now 6-1 on the season.
Wisniewski had 3 strikeouts and gave up just 1 walk in five innings while Hoffman rolled up 4 strikeouts and allowed just 2 walks and 1 hit in three innings.
In addition to Kukulka, Wisniewski and Matt Dexheimer also had 3 hits in the second game for Lakes, which pounded out 15 total hits in the finale.
Grant 11, Woodstock North 3: Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Grant scored 9 runs in the inning to rally for the victory.
John Schenning had 3 hits, including a home run. He finished with 3 RBI.
The Bulldogs also got 2 hits (including a double) and 2 RBI from Jordan Villarreal, a double and 3 RBI from Jared Helmich and a triple from Jake Ring.
Zach Niedrich got the win.
