Class 3A-4A scouting report, Northwest
Here's what to expect out of the upcoming girls basketball postseason for teams from the Northwest suburbs.
Class 4A Hoffman Estates sectional
Geneva regional
No. 7 seed Elk Grove is the lone area representative in this regional and the Grenadiers (13-13) will face No. 10 Batavia in the 8:10 p.m. semifinal on Tuesday.
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, No. 2 Geneva meets the winner of Monday's play-in game between No. 13 Lake Park and No. 19 Glenbard East.
The championship is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. All-conference junior forward Diamond Boyd leads the Grens offense which is run by junior guard Kelly Naughton.
Conant regional
The host school and No. 15 seeded Cougars (8-19) will play No. 4 York in the 6 p.m. semifinal on Tuesday. The second game features No. 5 West Chicago and No. 12 Willowbrook with the championship set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Conant, led by all-conference forward Natalie Kutrumanes, is 8-19 heading into the regional. York (17-12) defeated the Cougars 56-48 in the host school's second game. The Dukes, led by AnnaBell Lansdowne's 19 points, are coming off a 47-35 win over Buffalo Grove.
Bartlett regional
No. 8 Schaumburg is coming off its first winning regular season in coach Ashley Berggren's four seasons. All-conference selections Alyssa Saklak and Amanda Kelly lead the Saxons' offense while the defense is coming off a superb 43-25 effort against Prospect.
Schaumburg opens at 8:10 p.m. Tuesday against No. 9 St. Charles East in the semifinals. The Saints defeated the Saxons 52-41 in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tournament.
Top-seeded Bartlett meets the winner of Monday's play-in game at 6 p.m.
The championship is Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Addison Trail regional
No. 14 Hoffman Estates meets No. 17 Addison Trail in Monday's play-in game with the winner advancing to Tuesday's semifinal against No. 3 Wheaton Warrenville South at 6 p.m.
The second semifinal matches No. 6 Wheaton North against No. 11 Glenbard North with the final set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Junior all-conference forward Destinee Young is the top scorer for the Hawks (11-16), coming off back-to-back wins over Conant and Buffalo Grove. The Hawks won the Bradley Bourbonnais tourney at Christmas time.
Class 4A Palatine sectional
Warren regional
No. 15 Buffalo Grove and No. 18 Waukegan kick off action with Monday's play-in game at 7:30 p.m. The Bison (5-24) are hoping to have leading scorers Emily Cho (ankle) and Bailey North (elbow) ready to go after a 47-35 loss to York on Thursday in which they saw limited action.
The winner advances to Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal to face No. 2 Rolling Meadows (24-4), which won its first Mid-Suburban League championship in 39 years with a dramatic 52-51 triumph at Fremd.
Coach Todd Hatfield's top scorers are sophomores Jackie Kemph (MSL East Player of the Year), Alexis Glasgow and Jenny Vliet. Seniors Ann Marie Lynch, Amanda Gunn and Josie Suchecki also help lead the Mustangs, who won the Mundelein Christmas and the Season's End tourneys.
Meadows' 24 wins are a school record.
No. 6 Warren meets No. 10 Palatine in the 8:10 p.m. semifinal with the championship set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The Pirates (17-10), led by all-conference selections Katelyn Mayer and Nia Pappas, have reeled off five straight wins after a tough 48-42 loss at Fremd. The defense has been sharp, limiting opponents to an average of 37 points in the last five wins, two in overtime over Lake Park and Hoffman.
Lake Zurich regional
Former Buffalo Grove coach Tom Dineen has the highest-seeded team with No. 4 Stevenson facing No. 13 Highland Park in Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal.
No. 5 Lake Zurich and No. 12 Mundelein meet in the 8:10 p.m. semifinal while the championship game will be played Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Libertyville regional
No. 14 Wheeling (10-17), which has won four of its last five games, meets No. 19 Round Lake in Monday's 7:30 p.m. play-in game.
Senior Kellie Kuzmanic and her freshman sister Deanna, both all-conference, have helped lead the Wildcats and get their chance to play together for the only time in a high school state series.
Monday's winner moves on to meet No. 3 Libertyville in Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal while No. 7 Prospect and No. 11 Barrington meet at 8:10 in the second semifinal.
The championship is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Senior Maura Benson and freshman Taylor Will, both all-conference, lead a balanced attack for Prospect while all-conference senior guard Nicole Collins directs the Barrington offense.
Prospect (15-12), which placed second in the MSL East and Barrington (13-17), fourth in the MSL West, did not play this season. The Knights were 7-3 in the East with two of the losses to MSL champion Rolling Meadows.
Hersey regional
Top-seeded Fremd plays the winner of Tuesday's play-in game between No. 17 Lake Forest and No. 16 Deerfield at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Vikings (21-5), led by all-conference selections senior Jessi Wiedemann, junior Ashley McConnell (MSL West Player of the Year) and freshman Haley Gorecki, are coming off their third straight MSL West championship. Bernie Williams and Marilyn Lortz round out the starting five for Fremd, which took fourth place in the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.
No. 8 Zion-Benton and No. 9 Hersey meet in the second semifinal at 8:10 p.m. The Huskies (16-13) were second to Rolling Meadows in the Season's End tourney and took fifth place in the Wheaton North Christmas tourney.
Hersey, led by all-conference selections Jen Hall and Maggie Hogen, handed MSL champion Rolling Meadows its only loss in the MSL East 38-33.
The championship is Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Class 4A New Trier sectional
Niles North regional
No. 9-seeded and Central Suburban North champ Maine West pairs off with No. 7 Niles North for the second time in two weeks in Tuesday's 8:10 semifinal.
In the 6 p.m. semifinal, top-seeded Maine South meets the winner of Monday's play-in game between No. 16 Leyden and No. 17 Schurz.
The title game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The Warriors (12-16), who clinched their 25th conference title in 31 years under coach Derril Kipp, are the only area team in this sectional. Sophomore Brittany Collins (16 ppg) and senior Amanda Hoye were honored as Central Suburban North all-conference players prior to the Warriors' 42-36 win over Glenbrook North on Friday.
Other regionals in this sectional are being hosted by Evanston, Glenbrook South and Niles West.
Class 3A St. Viator sectional
Chicago Northside Prep regional
St. Viator is the area's only team playing in the Class 3A tourney.
The Lions drew the No. 5 seed and will face No. 12 Northside in Thursday's semifinal at 8:10 p.m.
In the 6 p.m. game, No. 4 Grayslake North meets the winner of Tuesday's play-in game between No. 13 North Chicago and No. 20 Roosevelt.
The championship is Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Lions (17-13) enjoyed another winning season under coach Paul Bjerkness and had won four in a row (Regina, Bishop McNamara, Wheaton St. Francis and Joliet Catholic) until falling to Marian Catholic in the final game of the regular season.
St. Viator, which was also in the Class 3A tourney two years ago, will host a sectional.
Other regionals in this sectional are being hosted by Wauconda, Vernon Hills and Carmel.
