PEORIA -- Schaumburg girls coach Jon Macnider didn't know how correct he was when he called this season a gift from the cross country gods.
Macnider received the ultimate retirement gift Saturday afternoon at Peoria's Detweiller Park as the Saxons won their third state title 112-121 over Mid-Suburban West rival Palatine in the Class 3A race. The Saxons also won titles in 1982 and 1999 under Macnider, who has been in charge of the program for 31 years.
Karen Lesiewicz (16:55) and Colette Falsey (16:59) led the Saxons by finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Britten Petrey (22nd), Hannah Coombs (58th) and Kelsey Steenstrup (59th) rounded out their top five.
Courtney Brown (16:44) finished fourth to lead Palatine. Tess Wasowicz was 15th and Sarah McIntosh (30th), Emily Schulte (37th) and Jessica Lincoln (76th) completed its top five.
Wheaton Warrenville South finished third behind McKenna Kipple (11th) and Lauren Mordini (18th). Geneva took fourth behind third-place finisher Kelly Whitley and Prospect was fifth with sophomore Brooke Wolfe also taking fifth.
Ariel Michalek of Oswego East won the race in 16:32 by two seconds over Hinsdale Central's Jill Hardies. Christina Gastfield of Rolling Meadows finished sixth.
In Class 2A, Peoria Notre Dame won the team title and Woodstock's Kayla Beattie ran 16:22 to win the individual race by 49 seconds. Kelly McShea of Wheaton St. Francis took fifth and Cassie Kruse of Hampshire was eighth.
Decatur St. Teresa won the Class 1A title.
