Candidates’ stands on gambling helpful
The Daily Herald did a nice job in its Feb. 18 paper reviewing the opinions of state senate opponents in the upcoming Republican primary, Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale, and Chris Nybo of Elmhurst. The article asked engaging questions and gave a fair representation of their replies.
Several important facts stood out for this reader: 1) Dillard and Nybo are competing in the 24th District, which the Democratic-majority General Assembly deliberately carved up specifically so popular Republican candidates would have to run against each other. The district, according to the Daily Herald, now includes (get ready to laugh) all or parts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park, Westmont, Wheaton and Willowbrook. It’s almost as if a kindergarten child cut up a map and pasted it together and called it a district.
2) I’m greatly impressed with Dillard’s and Nybo’s denunciation of further Illinois gambling expansion. Gambling creates far more problems than whatever benefits may be derived from gambling revenue. Research has shown that for every dollar raised from gambling, three dollars must be spent to correct problems arising from the increased gambling.
