Briefs: Wheaton body identified

Wheaton police said Tuesday they've identified the man killed Friday night by a vehicle while crossing Geneva Road in Wheaton. Police are now in the process of locating next of kin to notify them of the man's death. Once that occurs, the department will release the victim's name.

Job training, GED programs

The Early School Leaver Program in Addison is accepting applications for its 2008 spring semester that begins in mid-January. The next informational meetings are at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and Dec. 12 at the Technology Center of DuPage, 301 S. Swift Road, Addison. The program offers free GED preparation, workplace skill-building, and career training on weekdays for DuPage residents ages 17 to 21. Habitat receives $142,500

Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity of Aurora has received a $142,000 grant from the Aurora-based Dunham Fund. Habitat volunteers will use the grant to build a new home on Pearl Street in Montgomery for a family in need. Since its founding in 1989, Fox Valley Habitat has built 36 homes, including 28 in Aurora and eight in Montgomery, to shelter more than 150 people. The Dunham Fund continues the philanthropic giving of late Aurora businessman John C. Dunham.

Lions 'Candy Days' to start

Members of the Lisle Lions Club will be out in yellow vests distributing rolls of candy and collecting money for Lions of Illinois Foundation projects Friday and Oct. 12. They will be at all major intersections in town and at some businesses. The donations go toward Lions' programs for the visually and hearing impaired and for local humanitarian projects. National choir hits Wheaton

The National Boys Choir of Australia will join the Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus for a concert Friday at St. Michael Church in Wheaton. The Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus is also a world-traveling group that provides any interested child with choral music experiences, regardless of a child's musical background or socio-economic circumstances. This is the chorus' second performance at the church. The National Boys Choir of Australia is a non-denominational, not-for-profit association with about 200 boys who join at about age 7 and leave when their voice changes. They come from a wide range of ethnic and social backgrounds and work under the artistic direction of Peter Casey and Philip Carmody. Tickets are on sale. Longfellow students walk

Students from Longfellow Elementary School in Wheaton will join students around the world today in celebration of International Walk to School Day. Longfellow students will walk to school along with their parents and teachers. The event will begin about 8:45 a.m. with kids, parents and teachers walking from various meeting points in close proximity to the school. Walkers will arrive at the school about 9 a.m. International Walk to School Day is expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world. The event promotes walking and bicycling to encourage physical activity among children.

Financial literacy training

The Northern Trust Company has awarded the DuPage Homeownership Center a $10,000 grant to provide financial literacy workshops and counseling to its clients. The Wheaton-based non-profit helps provide a variety of services to first-time homebuyers, as well as low-and moderate-income residents looking to purchase homes within DuPage County. Winfield hearing

The Winfield plan commission will move its monthly hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday to Winfield Central School, 0S150 Park St. The panel will hold a public hearing on a plan by Central DuPage Hospital to construct a temporary helicopter pad near the northwest corner of Winfield and Highlake roads. The panel also may decide on recommending changes to the village's ordinances dealing with where and when residents can store and park recreational vehicles on their property.

Health & Safety Fair

Glendale Heights' 11th Annual Health & Safety Fair runs from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Glendale Heights Sports Hub, 250 Civic Center Plaza. Residents can stop in for the teddy bear clinic, blood pressure and vision screenings, emergency vehicle tours and giveaways including smoke detectors. The fair's sponsored by Marquardt School District 15, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Queen Bee School District 16, Glenside and Bloomingdale fire protection districts, Glenside and Bloomingdale libraries, Glendale Heights and Glenbard High School District 87.
