Wrap: Royals, Hawks advance

With 11.5 total points, Larkin's badminton team finished second overall behind York (17 points) at the Larkin sectional Thursday.

En route to the tally, the Royals qualified four athletes to the next level in singles players Emily Sothikhoun and Nattaphone Senesombath, as well as the doubles team of Bonnie Bielarz/Marybeth Flores (19-5) who placed third.

Sothikhoun finished second overall and will bring a 22-6 overall record with her to state next weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Senesombath (24-6) placed third defeating York's Ellen Stein 21-11, 19-21, 21-10.

Bartlett collected 4 team points behind doubles team Anooja Rengnekar/Jenna Bujarski, who will represent the Hawks at state.

Baseball

Prairie Ridge 12, Grayslake Central 0: Prairie Ridge (16-6, 7-0) recorded its 10th consecutive victory with this 12-0 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division shutout. Nick Martini was on the hill for the win fanning 10 batters in five innings of work. Sam Zagone came on in relief striking out all six batters he faced.

At the plate, Logan Olson (2-for-5, 2b, 2 RBI), Martini (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 runs) and T.J. Swank (2-for-4, 3 RBI) led the 14-hit attack.

Hampshire 4, Harvard 1: With offensive contributions from James Goebbert (2 RBI), Joe Moore (2-for-3, RBI), Cameron Rath (hit, RBI) and Tyler Bentley (2b), Hampshire (10-9, 4-3) walked away with this Big Northern East Conference win. On the mound for the Whips, Ryan Burke (3-1) got the complete game win striking out nine while allowing just one run.

Burlington Central 12, North Boone 6: Doubling North Boone's run tally, Burlington Central (10-7, 4-2) picked up this Big Northern East win. Big plate appearances from Austin Jarvis (3-for-4, 2b, HR, 2 RBI) who was a triple short of the cycle, Bryan Bell (2-for-4) and Drew Perly (2-for-5, 3 RBI) helped in the win.

Perly was on the bump for the victory allowing 6 runs, just one earned on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts.

Jacobs 10, McHenry 2: Out-hitting McHenry 11-4, Jacobs (9-6, 4-2) got on top early and stayed there for this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory. At the dish, Ricky Rizutto (2-for-4), Mike Castillo (2-for-5) and Johnny Amann (2-for-4) had key contributions. Castillo had a solid outing on the mound for the win fanning eight and allowing just 1 earned run the seven innings.

Dundee-Crown 8, Woodstock 7: With 10 hits apiece, Dundee-Crown (11-6, 4-2) still managed to come out on top of this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division meeting. Timely hitting from Ryan Horcher (2-for-4), Eric Barber (2-for-4, 2b, HR), Logan Kissack (2-for-3, HR) and Trevor Wogsland (2-for-3, 2b) was much needed. Utilizing three different pitchers, Ken Warzalek got the win allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while fanning two in four innings of work.

Elgin 6, Streamwood 3: Trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Tom Roth hit a 2-run double to even things up, and Elgin (5-12, 5-11) went on to win this Upstate Eight Conference contest. Ben Stone added a solo home run. Josh Smith (2-3) was on the hook for the win allowing one earned run on 4 hits while striking out eight.

Brian Domokos suffered the loss, while Gabe Roman led plate efforts for Streamwood (6-13, 5-9) with an RBI double.

South Elgin 6, Lake Park 1: The Storm (8-8, 8-8) came out victorious over Lake Park in the Upstate Eight. Josh Myers went the distance pitching all 7 innings with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks. Myers scattered 5 Lake Park hits allowing only 1 run in the bottom half of the first inning and proceeded to throw a shutout the rest of the game. Kyle Fitzpatrick was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Ryan Keuner collected 2 hits and scored 2 runs while Tim Ahern contributed going 2-for-3.

Bartlett 5, Larkin 4: Bartlett (13-6, 12-5) battled the Royals for eight innings and came out on top in Upstate Eight Conference play. Dan Kasper snagged the win on the mound pitching all 8 innings with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks. Mike Selvaggi and Nick Quagliano led the offense both going 2-for-4 with a home run. Tucker Erickson (1-for-4) and George Tintera (1-for-3) each added a home run for Bartlett as well.

Crystal Lake Central 6, Huntley 3: In nine innings of Fox Valley (Fox) action the Tigers defeated Huntley. Zach Liebman suffered the loss for the Red Raiders, allowing only 1 earned run with 7 strikeouts. Raymond Foote (2-for-4) and Chris Klein (1-for-3) contributed at the plate for the Red Raiders.

Cary-Grove 5, Crystal Lake South 0: The Trojans (15-7, 3-3) pounded out 4 runs in the first inning to down Crystal Lake South in the Fox Valley (Valley). Ben Mottashed (4-3) pitched all 7 innings for the win collecting 5 strikeouts with 1 walk. Chris Waylock led the offense with a 3-run home run. The Trojans didn't stop there as Eric Aguilar scored the final run of the game with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Kegan Mascarella (2-for-4) and Mike Zasadil each added a double for Cary-Grove. For the Gators Sean Wilson suffered the loss on the mound pitching all 7 innings. Wilson managed to contribute at the plate with a double.

Boys volleyball

South Elgin d. Streamwood: With key offensive and defensive contributions from Robbie Vasquez (20 assists), Jim McMahon (7 kills, 8 digs) and Akash Patel (5 kills, 5 digs), South Elgin (7-17, 2-5) picked up this Upstate Eight Conference win over the Sabres, by scores of 25-20, 25-15, Streamwood kept it close with help from Fabian Ramos (3 kills, 7 digs) and Sean Harring (3 kills).

Lake Park d. Larkin: Despite solid efforts from Brendyn Dobbeck (6 assists, ace), Brad Potts (4 blocks, 4 kills), Chase Sund (4 blocks) and Alan Rosenburg (4 blocks), Larkin dropped this Upstate Eight Conference meeting in two games (25-7, 25-15).

College softball

St. Francis 3, Judson 2: St. Francis eliminated Judson from the CCAC tournament with this win in eight innings.

Tricia Lakotish doubled and had an RBI for the Eagles (23-23), and Brittany Nicley had Judson's other RBI.

Judson left 11 runners on in the game and had 11 hits overall to St. Francis' 5. Amy Meier and Carrie Sensor led Judson by going 2-for-4. Aimee Ewert added a triple.

Ewert suffered the complete-game loss.

Judson will complete its season with a 4 p.m. Senior Day doubleheader against Carthage on Monday at the Elgin Sports Complex.

College baseball

ECC 10, Sauk Valley 3: The Spartans' offense was unstoppable as ECC (22-13) combined for 14 hits to defeat Sauk Valley. Matt Revelle, Trevor Rutkowski and Ben Vincent all pounded out 2 hits for Elgin. Revelle and Routkowski each combined for a double while Matt Wietlispach hit a triple. Rob Quick was on the mound earning the win with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 6 ¿ innings pitched.

Judson wins two: The Judson University baseball team will be playing for its first-ever CCAC Tournament championship today after the Eagles won both of their games Thursday to stay in the winner's bracket. Judson defeated Olivet Nazarene 6-2 and Purdue-North Central 9-7.

Kyle Kobernus won his sixth game of the season in beating Olivet. Juan DeArmas and Carlos Soto combined to defeat Purdue-North Central in Game 2. DeArmas got win.

Judson will now play the winner of the ONU vs. PNC game at noon for the championship. Whomever plays Judson would have to defeat the Eagles twice to claim the title.
