McHenry County Chapter of AARP: The McHenry County Chapter of AARP will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at The Fountains of Crystal Lake, on Route 31, one mile north of Route 176. The speaker is Josette on "Getting to Know One's Self. It is suggested you bring something to beat on. In June members will have a luncheon at Country Buffet. Baby Boomers Single Club: Club will meet from 8:15 to 11:30 p.m. Friday at The Milk Pail, 14630 Route 25, East Dundee.

Algonquin Garden Club: The Algonquin Garden Club will sell perennials dug from members' gardens and flowers for Mother's Day from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The sale will be at the Algonquin Town Center near Butera Grocery east of the Fox River on Algonquin Road (Route 62).

Fox Valley Rocketeers: The Fox Valley Rocketeers, a local club of model rocketry enthusiasts, is hosting its May Rocket Launch from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at a farm field at 505 Menge Road, Marengo, roughly at the intersection of Menge and Bauman Roads.
The launch theme is "Slip Glidin' Away" for rocket and boost gliders. Rocket fliers are welcome to come and fly low- and mid-power rockets.

Three Fires Boy Scout Council: Scouts from across the six county area of DuPage, Kane, Kendall, DeKalb, and parts of Will and Cook counties served by the Boy Scouts of America, Three Fires Council will showcase decades of timeless ideals in Scouting from the organizations inception in 1910 leading up to the coming milestone in 2010 at Scout-O-Rama.
The event is open to the public and being held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine, at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Tickets to the event are $4 per person and offer added value through coupon offers from Burger King, Colonial Café, Dick's Sporting Goods and Oberweis Dairy.
Note, additional parking will be available at the corporate headquarters of International, 4201 Winfield Road, Warrenville.

Friends of the Fox River: The Friends of the Fox River will host its ninth annual "Monitor With Your Mother": Mother's Day River Celebration" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Fox River Shores Forest Preserve in Carpentersville.
The Friends of the Fox River Watershed Monitoring Network and Dundee-Crown High School are hosting this free Family Mother's Day Celebration.
This fun and educational community event comes complete with free food, games, prizes, exhibits, live music, and paddling. This year's theme is "Energy and Our Water Quality."

The April 14 meeting began with the Salute to the Colors and the prayer by Chaplain Patrick Herrmann. The posting of the colors for the opening of the baseball season at the Plato Park was canceled due to the inclement weather.
VFW Loyalty Day was May 1 and a proclamation was signed by Hampshire Village President Jeff Magnusson and the Commander and Ladies Auxiliary President. VFW Post 8043 participated in the Batavia Post 1197 Loyalty Day parade May 4.
Nomination and election of officers was held and installation of officers will be held at the next meeting, with past commander Roman Deutsch as installing officer for the coming year.
Dates to remember: April 11 was the official Persian Gulf War cease fire in 1991; May 1 was Loyalty Day, Law Day and National Day of Prayer. May 7 was the unconditional surrender of all German forces signed in 1945; and May 8 is V.E. Day declared in 1945. May 9 is Military Spouses Day.
Hampshire VFW Ladies Auxiliary: Hampshire Ladies Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8043 will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Hampshire Township building, 100 Center St., Hampshire.
The 60th Anniversary Party honoring the 60-year members is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. June 23 at the Citizens Bank community room.
Election of officers was held with the following slate of officers for the coming year: Jerrilynne Partlo, president; Velda Grimes, senior vice president; Jean Stojan, junior vice president; Mary Ann Peterson, secretary; Arlene Reiser, treasurer; Elaine Setter, chaplain; Irene Lee, guard; Fran Stuehier, patriotic instructor; Pearl Herrman, banner bearer; Historian Doris Klock; trustees Leola Widmayer, Joyce Deutsch and Mary Jo Stojan; and color bearers Dolores Tegtman, Donna Proffitt, Debra Pease and Connie Von Keudell. Installation of officers will be held at the May 12 meeting. The audit report will be completed by the trustees.

Toast of the Fox: Toast of the Fox Toastmasters Club 8325 will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and May 27 at Elgin Academy's Sears Gallery, 350 Park St. Elgin. Membership is open to adults who would like to improve their communication skills. Visitors are welcome.

Riverside Chorus: On Tuesday, the Riverside Chorus, a member of Sweet Adelines, International, is hosting a workshop on the development of choreography that can be used while performing Barbershop Style songs.
Two professional dance instructors will demonstrate several songs being worked on during the rehearsal. Cathy Perfetti currently teaches ballet in Cary and LaVergne Tharge teaches tap in Carpentersville.
Refreshments will be served. All ladies interested in learning about barbershop style singing are welcome to attend.
The group rehearses from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fourth and Main streets, West Dundee. This workshop will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday
Riverside Chorus is open to any female age 13 and older who enjoys singing. The group now has 15 members. Director is Suzie Lewis of Elgin.

Elgin Woman's Club: The Elgin Woman's Club will host its annual spring luncheon Tuesday at Villa Olivia Country Club, Route 20 and Naperville Road, Bartlett.
The theme for the meeting will be "In The Pink." All members and guests are asked to wear pink in honor of the occasion.
Year-end events at the meeting will include the installation of new officers and new members and a memorial service.
Newly elected officers are Ethel Gardner, who will be installed as president of the club; Georgia Ross as first vice president; and Helen McCulloch as treasurer. Current officers who will serve with them are" Judith Colletti, second vice president; Audrey Gilbert, recording secretary; and Lou Mutter, historian. Newly elected department chairs are: Lou Mutter, arts; Cheryl Lee, conservation; Linda Fagan, health department and nominating committee; Suzanne Hamaker, education; and Leigh Butler, home life.
Continuing to serve as department chairwomen are Bridget McGuinness, international/public affairs and Joy Jensen, publicity. The scholarship committee will again be chaired by Loa McLean. Joy Jensen and Lois Oberst will continue to serve as representatives to the Sherman Hospital and Sherman West Court board of directors, respectively.

NARFE: National Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion meeting room at 820 N. Liberty St. (Route 25) in Elgin. Lunch is available in the American Legion lunchroom prior to the meeting. Coffee and dessert will be served after the meeting. This month Elgin Senior Services activity director Minnie Vasquez and Patti Strahan will give a program about preventing falls. Strahan will lead some light exercises.

Golden K Kiwanis: The Elgin Golden K Kiwanis will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 Division St., Elgin. The program will be by Jeff Hem, the Kane County Cougars radio announcer on the upcoming baseball season. Visitors are welcome. For information, call (847) 741-7176.
Independent Order of Odd Fellows: The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge 105, 131 Sabin St. in Sycamore, is having a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Dinner will include meat balls, sausage, hard crust bread, salad, coffee, juice and desert. Donations are $7 for adults, $4 for children, age 7 to 14. Children under 7 get in free. Fox Valley Bike and Ski Club: The Fox Valley Bicycle and Ski Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. They invite members and area cyclists to attend.
Tom and Julie Szafraniec, longtime club members and ride leaders for the clubs day and weekend rides, will be the featured speakers. They will talk on how to plan and lead a successful ride, including safe bike handling on the trail and on the road. For details, visit www.fvbsc.org.
Elgin Genealogical Society: Elgin auctioneer John Prigge will present "Who Gets What" on May 15 at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. If you've every been faced or will be faced with the responsibility of disbursing items from a loved one who has moved or passed away, Prigge will give tips and suggestions on making the process easier.

Elgin Breakfast Rotary: Tammy Duckworth will speak at a special lunch session of the Elgin Breakfast Rotary at noon May 16 at the Elgin Country Club, off Weld Road.
Duckworth is the director of the Illinois Veterans Affairs Department. She served in the Iraq War where as a result of combat wounds, lost both of her legs and received damage to her right arm.
The luncheon will start at noon at the Elgin Country Club. It will take the place of the regularly scheduled Thursday morning meeting. The luncheon is free to club members and guest are welcome for a fee of $20.
