Elgin Area Historical Society: The Old Main Museum will host several activities to celebrate Preservation Month and International Museum Day today.

The day begins with an 11 a.m. tour of Elgin Academy lead by Headmaster John Cooper. View the campus art collection and landmarks.

At noon, the first of the Brown Bag Lunch lecture will take place. Mayor Ed Schock will speak on Elgin Preservation; Past, Present and Future. A brief slide show of revitalized cultural and historic Elgin sites will precede the Mayor's talk.

Bring your lunch; beverages and dessert will be provided.

At 1 p.m., Mike Powers will sell and sign his recently published book, "All-American Stories: Elgin Myths and Memories."

From 1 to 4 p.m. behind the scene tours of the museum will be offered. Tour the museum's off-limit archives to view the local history treasures not on exhibit.

American Legion Post 119: American Legion Post 119 is looking for organizations to participate in the Memorial Day Parade.

American Legion Frank H. Nagel Jr. Post 119 of Fox River Grove will sponsor a Memorial Day Parade and ceremony on May 26 starting at Algonquin Road School, 975 Algonquin Road, Fox River Grove.

The parade steps off at 8:30 a.m.

Elgin Genealogical Society: Elgin auctioneer John Prigge will present "Who Gets What" today at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. If you've every been faced or will be faced with the responsibility of disbursing items from a loved one who has moved or passed away, Prigge will give tips and suggestions on making the process easier.

Altrusa International: The Altrusa International Club of Elgin Inc. announces Caren Nickelsen of Elgin as the recipient of its Woman of the Year 2008 award.

Nickelsen will be honored at the 59th annual Woman of the Year Recognition Dinner today at Villa Olivia Country Club in Bartlett. The event includes cocktails and reception at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. with program to follow.

Baby Boomers Singles Club: Spring is finally here and the Baby Boomers Single Club is planning a fun event which includes mini-golf and barbecue.

The event is planned from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at The Milk Pail, 14630 Route 25, East Dundee. Wear casual clothes. Meet new people and spruce up your golfing skills. If you're not a mini-golfer, come just for the BBQ and company.

There are no set tee times. Cost is $23 per person for golf and barbecue or $18 for barbecue only. Barbecue includes hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, salads and beverages, with a cash bar.

USA Dance: In honor of Armed Forces Day, The Greater Fox Valley Chapter will host a USO Style dance "Salute to the Fox Trot" from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Sage Ballroom of Lakeside Legacy Arts Park, home of the historic Dole Mansion, 401 Country Club Road, Crystal Lake. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The couple wearing uniforms, period or patriotic attire may win the grand prize. Otherwise, dressy casual is suggested but no jeans or gym shoes.

A free Fox Trot lesson will be taught by Frank and Jackie Penze from 7:30 to 8 p.m. Also included in admission of $12 for non-members and $8 for USA Dance members are appetizers, cake and coffee, and a chance to win door prizes.

Elgin Breakfast Rotary: Tammy Duckworth will speak at a special lunch session of the Elgin Breakfast Rotary at noon Friday at the Elgin Country Club, off Weld Road.

Duckworth is the director of the Illinois Veterans Affairs Department. An Illinois National Guard, she was also the 2006 Democratic nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives seat for the 6th District of Illinois. She served in the Iraq War where as a result of combat wounds, lost both of her legs and received damage to her right arm.

The luncheon begins at noon at the Elgin Country Club. It will take the place of the regularly scheduled Thursday morning meeting.

CAGG-NI: The Computer-Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois meetings are held at 10:30 a.m. the third Saturday of each month at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg.

Leopard Operating System (MAC) will be covered on Saturday. Jim Kolak will demo Apple's latest MAC operating system -- Leopard OSX 10.5. New features such as Quick Look, Time Machine, Spaces and many others (300-plus in all) will enhance your computer experience.

PBW of Illinois: On Monday, the Professional Business Women of Illinois will host "Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It", a motivational workshop designed to explore how to achieve what you want out of life.

This workshop is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at in the lower-level community room at Home State Bank, corner of Route 14 and Main Street in Cary.

National trainer, local business owner and published author, Judy Pelinski will host the two-hour interactive workshop offering hands-on activities and valuable insight on how to discover your true desires and reach for your dreams.

Pelinski, a board member of PBWI. is a certified Interior Redesign and Staging trainer who has been teaching students nationwide and recognized as an industry leader. She owns Fresh Look Interiors and The Staging and Redesign Academy.

She incorporates techniques into each of her sessions that help students envision their desires, discover their strengths and follow their dreams, in business and in their personal lives.

The cost of the workshop is $15 for nonmembers and $10 for PBWI members.

Fox Valley Beaux Arts: Fox Valley Beaux Arts will celebrate the annual installation of officers Tuesday at Villa Olivia Country Club, off Route 20 in Bartlett. Cocktails begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner for members and their guests.

The scholarship winners for this year have been invited to the celebration where there names will announced.

Women's Service League of Hampshire: The Women's Service League of Hampshire has announced the winner of their 2008 scholarship.

Hampshire High School Senior Megan Kozenczak will be awarded the $3,000 scholarship on Tuesday at the school's Senior Honors Night.

The WSL thanks the many residents and businesses for their support and donations. This award would not be possible without community support. The group also applauds the efforts of all the students who applied for the scholarship and wish them well in their efforts.

Signal Hill DAR: Signal Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution's last meeting of the spring will be held Tuesday in room A on the first floor of the Barrington Area Public Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington. The gathering will be at 11:30 a.m. followed by a box lunch at noon.

Elgin IAAP: "Roberts' Rules, or, Let Bob Do It!" is the encore presentation by Pat Pollmann and Ruth Stearns at the May 21 meeting of the Elgin Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals.

Parliamentary procedure and Roberts Rules of Order can be frightening and frustrating to many chapters and boards.

Through role-playing and humor, attendees learn the proper procedures for conducting a business meeting efficiently and professionally, while still allowing for a wide variety of leadership styles. Attendees also learn to understand the responsibilities of the officers and members, as well as the proper protocol in meetings for all members. This meeting also includes the election of next year's chapter officers.

McHenry County Legionnaires: McHenry County Legionnaires from all County Posts are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the McHenry County Council at 7 p.m. May 22. The meeting site is American Legion, Lake in the Hills Post 1231, 1101 W. Algonquin Road, in Lake in the Hills. The host post is Lake in the Hills Post 1231.

The McHenry County Council will perform the "Post Everlasting" ceremony to honor the Legionnaires who died during the last year. Attending post delegates are invited to bring lists of their departed Legionnaires on tracing paper for this ceremony.

South Elgin Lions: South Elgin Lions Club Bingo night is set for May 24. Doors open at 5 p.m. and Bingo and raffle games start at 7 p.m. with an early bird game at 6:50 p.m.

The first 200 Bingo players will be given a free chance to win $25,000. All this action takes place at South Elgin Lions Club, 500 Fulton St. The club offers hands free computerized Bingoplay and two smoking breaks during the evening; a covered shelter is provided.

Food and beverages are available for purchase. A total of $2,200 will be paid out on all Bingo games in addition to our raffle payouts.

Toast of the Fox: Toast of the Fox Toastmasters Club 8325 will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. May 27 at Elgin Academy's Sears Gallery, 350 Park St. Elgin. Membership is open to adults who would like to improve their communication skills. Visitors are welcome.
