Jacobs 8, Woodstock 4
The situation didn't seem ideal for a game-changing rally: Jacobs had two outs and nobody on, and the Golden Eagles' seventh, eighth, and ninth hitters were due up. But the Eagles wound up scoring 4 runs in that second inning and went on to defeat Woodstock, 8-4, in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin Tuesday.
The Eagles pounded out 16 hits in support of winning pitcher Becky Wilson. Sara Jacobson had 4 hits, Jenna Teson added 3, and Lauren Arceneaux, Lizzie Andrews, and Meghan Hough had 2 apiece for the Eagles (15-2, 6-0).
All of Jacobs' runs came with 2 outs.
"Clutch hitting is a matter of just being confident," said Jacobs coach Jeremy Bauer. "When there are two outs, you have to be a confident hitter, be sure that you understand your role, get runners over, go station to station, and try to get RBIs when they're out there for you."
Jacobson's 2-run double to the left-field wall was the big hit in the second inning. Teson and Julia Escareno also drove in runs. That gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead. The Blue Streaks had gone ahead on Abby Haubold's home run in the first and an unearned run in the second.
Jacobs added 2 more in the second when Andrews and Hough both scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles got some insurance with 2 more runs in the fourth. Arceneaux and Andrews had run-scoring singles.
The Eagles gave Wilson plenty of support with their bats, but not so much with their gloves. They made 5 errors, and 3 of Woodstock's runs were unearned.
One bright spot defensively was second-baseman Stephanie Schmidt, who made a couple of nice plays, including a backhanded stab of a hard grounder.
Still, 8 runs was plenty of support for Wilson, who struck out seven and walked just one. She seemed to get stronger as the game went on, retiring 7 of the last 8 batters she faced.
Jacobs almost broke the game wide open in the fifth. With the bases loaded and oe out, Escareno drove a ball down the left field line that landed inches foul. She then hit a soft liner that almost got through the infield but wound up as an inning-ending double play.
Cary-Grove 6, McHenry 4: Julie Clemment's mission was simple: hold down McHenry's powerful offense.
Mission accomplished.
Entering the game in relief of Kristen Bauer with 2 outs in the third inning, Clemment held McHenry to 2 runs on 6 hits in 4¿ innings of work to earn the win as the Trojans defeated McHenry 6-4 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play in Cary Tuesday afternoon.
"Julie came in throwing strikes and did a fantastic job," said Cary-Grove coach Tammy Olson. "She was really hitting her spots."
Clemment, who blanked the Warriors for 3½ innings, came into the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the third.
The first batter Clemment faced was McHenry leadoff hitter Maria Sorrentino. The senior right-hander induced Sorrentino to pop up to Cary-Grove catcher Kelly Smith to wiggle out of the jam.
"It was very nerve wracking when I came in the game," said Clemment. "I just took a deep breath and tried to relax and stay calm. I was able to throw my change-up and fastball to good locations."
Cary-Grove (12-8, 4-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by Lindsay Fritz.
McHenry (12-6, 4-3), which stranded 13 base runners, grabbed a 2-1 lead with 2 in the third on a RBI double by Ashley Voss.
The Trojans seized control of the game with 2 runs in the fourth inning and 3 in the fifth.
Alexis Haley led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a McHenry error to tie the game at 2. Cary-Grove took the lead for good on a RBI single by Megan Leibforth.
In the fifth, Kelly Smith collected a 2-run single and Meredith Riemann stroked a RBI single.
McHenry made a valiant comeback in the seventh with 2 runs on a 2-run double by Jaimee Rouse. But Clemment got tough and didn't allow the Warriors any more runs to pick up the win.
Fritz, Haley, Maggie O'Brien and Leibforth had 2 hits each for the Trojans, who had 12 hits in the game.
McHenry, which had 15 hits, got 2 hits each from Sorentino, Jordyn Butler, Jamie Maher, Voss, Rouse and Rachael Arns.
"We didn't play to win," said McHenry coach Pam McCarrell, whose team beat C-G 11-0 in the earlier meeting. "We took this game for granted and didn't capitalize on our chances."
