Cary-Grove dropped its season opener to Wisconsin-Parkview 79-65 at the Hoops for Healing Tournament in Belvidere on Tuesday despite 20 points from junior guard Nick Richter and 17 points from senior guard Matt Jones.
The Trojans trailed 33-28 at halftime, but the Vikings outscored them 31-21 in the third quarter to take control. Cary-Grove whittled the deficit to 10 points in the fourth quarter but was unable to pull within single digits.
"I bet we missed 7 shots around the hole that should have been made in the first half," Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle said. "We would have been in a close game if we'd just made shots around the basket. We had a lot of juniors out there who just haven't been there yet. Offensive rebounds did us in and our shooting percentage was pretty low."
Westminster Christian 56, Kirkland-Hiawatha 13: Ian Dutcher led the Warriors to an easy win in their own tournament. Ryan Beachler added 11 points for Westminster (2-0).
Wheaton Warrenville South 45, Streamwood 39: The Sabres (0-2) were led by Jerrold Ofiana and Marcus Greene with 13 and 11 points respectively in this Wheaton Academy tournament loss.
South Elgin 59, Glenbrook South 47: The Storm (2-0) picked up its second victory in as many days at the Fenton tournament. Tommy Childs led South Elgin with 19 points.
