Briefs: Food drive for pantry

To help replenish the shelves of Loaves and Fishes Community Pantry in Naperville, Ginny's Hallmark Shops will hold a food drive for the pantry at its three Naperville locations. People can drop off donations the week of Sept. 13-20 and receive a coupon for a 20 percent discount off their purchases at the store. Needed items included canned foods, dried foods, diapers and soap. Donations may be dropped off between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at 931 W. 75th St., 1212 S. Naper Blvd. and 1238 E. Ogden Ave.

District 87 looks for volunteers:

Glenbard High School District 87 is looking for members of its new Superintendent's Citizens Communication Forum. The group will meet quarterly throughout the school year to discuss core areas of the district including: student growth & achievement, teaching and learning, finance, and work environment. The 7 p.m. meetings are set for these dates: Sept. 15, Dec. 1, March 16, and June 1 at the administration center, 596 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. For more information, call (630) 469-9100.

Spinks' wife signing books:

Betty Wilson Spinks, the wife of Leon Spinks, will sign copies of her book, "Leon Spinks and Me" from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 200 S. Gary Ave., Bloomingdale. Spinks won a gold medal for the light heavyweight division in the 1976 summer Olympics and the title of heavyweight champion of the world in 1978 when he defeated Muhammad Ali. A rematch seven months later returned the title to Ali. For details, call (630) 671-9760.

Glenbard launches book project:

Glenbard High School District 87 is kicking off the second year of its Glenbard Gives Book project, which encourages students to donate new or used books to students in Chicago Public Schools and children in local nonprofit organizations. Barnes & Noble bookstores in Bloomingdale and Wheaton are donating 15 percent of sales on Sept. 20, and Sept. 21 to the project. Each student is encouraged to donate at least one book and participate in the making of bookmarks, bookplates and promotional banners during lunch and after school on Oct. 22. Books can be dropped off at any Glenbard school starting Oct. 1. Distribution is coordinated through the Carol Stream Rotary "Bookworm Angels" project.

Chorus to begin season:

Naperville Chorus begins its 2008-09 season with rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 815 S. Washington St., Naperville. Those wanting to participate should come a half-hour early to register and purchase music. Auditions are not required, but choral experience is helpful. Beginning in October, the chorus will move into North Central College's new Wentz Concert Hall. The group will give a holiday concert in December, join the Downers Grove Choral Society for a concert in February and perform a spring concert in May.
