Saturday's Fox Valley roundup
Brian Fahey and Scott Harm picked up the pitching wins Saturday as the Larkin baseball team swept an Upstate Eight Conference doubleheader from East Aurora, winning 2-1 and 13-7.
Fahey scattered 5 hits and didn't allow an earned run in the opener. He struck out four and walked none. Harm drove in both runs for the Royals.
In Game 2, Harm went 41/3 innings and Ivan Bello picked up the save for Larkin (15-12, 10-6). Harm was 2-for-3, Carlos Rojo went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 stolen bases, Alex Wahl was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI and Shane Glasgow went 3-for-4 for Larkin.
Prairie Ridge 12, Huntley 2: A day after snapping defending Class 4A state champion Prairie Ridge's Fox Valley Conference Fox Division winning streak at 20, Huntley fell hard to the Wolves on Saturday. Tanner Funke (6-2) suffered the loss for the Red Raiders (20-4-1, 6-1), who had 6 errors in the game. Funke (2-for-3, 2B), Phil Pupillo (2-for-3, 2B) and Jordan Contreras (2-for-3) led the Huntley offense.
Cary-Grove 5, Dundee-Crown 1: Chris Leifel went 2-for-4 with a home run for Dundee-Crown (4-16-1, 1-6) in this FVC Valley loss. Jake Romano was 2-for-4 for the Chargers.
Bartlett splits: Devin Rowland (6-1) tossed a 2-hitter to lead Bartlett to a 2-1 win over Waubonsie Valley in Game 1 of an Upstate Eight twinbill. Waubonsie came back and won Game 2 by a 7-1 score. David Palma had a bunt single RBI for Bartlett in Game 1. The Hawks (16-10, 11-7) managed just 3 hits in the nightcap. Matt DiCianni (1-1) suffered the loss on the mound.
CL South 5, Jacobs 0: Kevin Ambrose (4-2) threw a 2-hit shutout for the Gators (16-9, 4-3) in the FVC Valley. Greg Pagonatta hit a home run for South while Gavin Meyer tripled and Tony Paul doubled. Nick Panvino suffered the loss for Jacobs.
Elgin drops two: St. Charles East handed Elgin yet another 1-run loss, 7-6, in the opener of an Upstate Eight doubleheader. The Saints completed the sweep with a 12-4 win in Game 2. Tom Roth suffered the loss for the Maroons in Game 1 and Cory Michalik had 3 hits and 3 RBI. In Game 2, Adam Jazwiec was Elgin's losing pitcher. Dan Schmerber had a home run whole Lee Jackson and Roth each doubled for the Maroons (1-21, 1-16).
Westminster wins twice: Brandon Siewert (8-2) picked up a 2-1 win over Immaculate Conception and Michael Bruce (1-1) was the 15-5 winner over Durand as Westminster Christian (22-7) won twice on Saturday. Against IC, Brandon Weingartner had a home run for the Warriors while Kevin Elder was 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI and Joe McGannon had a double. Against Durand, Bruce was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and 6 RBI. Siewert was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, McGannon had a double, Andrew Mason had a double and Steve Berglund had a double for Westminster.
