Roadside check in Geneva

The state police and Geneva police will conduct a joint roadside safety check tonight in Geneva, according to Capt. Jeff Hedrich, District 2 Commander for the state police. Officers will be "watchful for drivers who are driving under the influence, transporting open alcoholic beverages, operating unsafe vehicles and driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license." The safety check is part of the "You Drink and Drive, You Lose" campaign, and is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Dist. 101 budget OK'd

The Batavia school board adopted the 2009-10 budget this week. It calls for operating expenses of $64.781 million and projects revenues of $64.789 million. The figures do not include money spent on construction or repaying debt. The budget runs from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

Self-defense class

Kaneland High School is offering a women's Rape Aggressive Defense class Saturday, Nov. 7 and 14. The first and third sessions are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the second is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $15. To register, call Judy Fabrizius at (630) 365-5100, ext. 340.

Suicide group to meet

Attempters' of Suicide support group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stone Manor, 528 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia. It is sponsored by Suicide Prevention Services. Call (630) 482-9696, or visit spsfv.org.

Cheer fundraiser

The Batavia High School cheerleading teams will host a "Flippin' and Flyin' " fundraiser at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 1201 W. Main St. Donations will go to Honor Flight, a program to send World War II veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C.

ECC's Spartan Drive closed

Spartan Drive, the primary access road to Elgin Community College, is closed to traffic until roughly Dec. 1 from McLean Boulevard to Renner Drive. The 3,000-foot section of roadway on the east side of the college will undergo resurfacing and reconstruction. To access the college from McLean during construction, use Fleetwood Drive or Weld Road to Second Street. From Randall Road, Spartan Drive closes at its intersection with Renner Drive, forcing drivers to turn north on Renner to access the campus. Final surfacing is expected in the spring.
