Senior Kelly Patchett threw a 4-hitter with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk Friday as Elgin's softball team notched its biggest nonconference win in several years, beating West Aurora 3-0.
Caris Alan and Brandi Hernandez each had 2 hits for Elgin (4-12), which scored all its runs in the fifth inning.
"We played really well both offensively and defensively tonight," said Elgin coach Peg Corcoran, whose team didn't committ an error in the game.
Bartlett splits in Ohio: Bartlett came out strong in Game 1 of the Wendy's Classic in Ashland, Ohio and knocked off Ballard High School, the defending Kentucky state champion, 4-3. The Hawks then fell to Hillsdale (Ohio) 5-3 in their second game of the day. Against Ballard, Elizabeth Kay (2-1) picked up the win in the circle and Callie Dennison came on with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and closed the door the rest of the way to earn the save. Kay and Rachel Anello each had triples for Bartlett. In the loss to Hillsdale, Dennison (5-3) surrendered 8 hits and suffered the loss. Anello and Lauren Chuchvara each had doubles for Bartlett (7-4).
"We had a great first game against the best team in Kentucky," said Hawks coach Jim Wolfsmith. "We hit the ball well and got back-to-back triples from Anello and Kay. Callie pitched a heck of a game in the second game but we couldn't move our runners. We had a runner on base in scoring position in every inning."
CL South 5, Grayslake Central 1: Emily Mahoney ran her record for the season to 7-1 with a 3-hitter and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run as the Gators (11-2) won for the 11th straight time. Mahoney struck out eight and walked three. Kaitlin Hardie was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI and Liz Adams had a double and an RBI for CL South.
South Elgin 11, Addison Trail 1: Kim Pierce was 3-for-4 and Lauren Vitiello 2-for-3 as the Storm (6-6) scored 10 runs in the first inning and rolled to a nonconference win. Zenia Cerda (2-2) was the winning pitcher with relief help from Dianna Besser.
Burlington Central 11, Byron 0: Kayla Oranger was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 runs scored and Brittany Priest went 2-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBI as the Rockets (7-3) won their third straight. Abby Morrow (2-for-3, 2B, RBI), Mackenzie Scott (2B) and Haley Albamonte (2B) also contributed to the BC offense. Jet Kein (4-2) earned the five-inning win, striking out six and walking two.
Prairie Ridge 6, Jacobs 5: Lauren Arceneaux suffered the loss as Jacobs (6-6) fell to Prairie Ridge in this Fox Valley Conference crossover. Maria Lombardo was 2-for-4 with a double for the Golden Eagles. Johanna Turner (9-2) gained the win for PR. Erin Smith was 3-for-4 with a double and Katie Schillinger had 3 hits for the Wolves (11-2).
Huntley 6, Cary-Grove 1: Sam Clemons (9-4) allowed 4 hits and struck out eight as the Red Raiders (10-6) won for the second day in a row against a FVC Valley opponent. Arianna Albanese (2-for-3), Kelsey Hagan (2-fore-3) and Alex Albanese (RBI) led the Huntley offense. Emma Gaulke was the losing pitcher.
Johnsburg 3, Dundee-Crown 0: Tiffany Rawlinson had the only hit for the Chargers (4-6) in this FVC crossover loss. Emilie Kerkman (6 Ks) was the losing pitcher.
St. Edward 5, IC 4: Veronica Rolando led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch as St. Edward won its third extra-inning game of the season. St. Edward had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Kristina Kolodziejczyk came home on Madeline Foehringer's squeeze bunt. Stephanie Werner was 4-for-5 for the Green Wave (9-3, 2-0 Suburban Catholic Conference), Kristina Brockner was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Kristi Knott had 2 hits and an RBI for the Wave, who host the Chicagoland Challenge beginning at 9 a.m. today at the Elgin Sports Complex. Sarah Field was the winning pitcher, allowing 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.
