Wheaton Municipal Band concert to feature a 'Musical Potpourri' July 28

When you think of concert band music, the percussion holds a key role in creating the dynamic effects and spellbinding moments. What would the band be without the beat of the bass drum, crash of the cymbals, and roll of the timpani?

On Thursday, July 28, the Wheaton Municipal Band will show off its newest addition to the percussion section - the shining timpani. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave. in downtown Wheaton.

Music director Bruce Moss programed a work that shows off the timpani and features section leader Andrew Packer with "Raise the Roof," a one-movement concerto for timpani and orchestra by the American composer Michael Daugherty.

The band purchased a new set of timpani, thanks to a grant from the DuPage Foundation.

The Adams Professional Generation II, Hammered Copper replaces an aging set.

"Timpani carry the ultimate power in all types of classical music," says Packer, one of the soloists for the evening. "This means that the performer needs to know when this power is asked for in a piece. Timpani parts are often a simple support for the low winds and brass of a band, but when it's time to shine, the timpanist needs to shine!"

Don't miss the opportunity to hear this booming addition to the Wheaton Municipal Band and the timpani soloist, Andrew Packer.

The program for the evening offers a mix from classic concert band composers.

"Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn" by Norman Dello Joio incorporates humor and a weaving of the Haydn theme throughout the three movements.

Dr. Bruce Moss also programs Percy Grainger's "Near Woodstock Town," a lesser known work by the prolific composer. Grainger is known for his use of folk music and virtuosic clarinet melodies. Grainger delights both the audience and musician with his use of melody, instrumentation, and technical challenge.

Also, on the program is the "Mancini Spectacular." Known for writing music to many movie hits, this work offers a peak into the world of Mancini movie magic.

The Wheaton Municipal Band brings a second soloist front and center: Martin Gelwesser performing "Concertino for Trombone" by Ferdinand David. A freelance trombonist, this is Gelwesser's third season with the band.
