Have you wondered what Relay For Life is all about?

Relay For Life is a tribute to those lost to cancer, a celebration for those who have survived cancer and hope for those who currently face cancer. It is an evening of inspirational speakers, entertainment, music, games, survivor dinner, pizza party and more. Get together with friends, neighbors or co-workers to walk the track and hang out with a great community of people. Funds for cancer research are raised via donations to participant teams and the purchase of luminarias in honor of loved ones touched by cancer.

A special invitation is extended to the Survivor Reception Dinner to anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer and one caregiver. The food is generously donated by local restaurants. In addition, you will be given a complimentary survivor T-shirt. To secure your tickets for dinner and T-shirt, register as a survivor at www.RelayForLife.org/NorthernDuPageIL.

The event kicks off with the Opening Ceremony at 6 p.m. Listen as inspirational speakers share their cancer journey. Special guests will get you pumped for an evening of remembrance and celebration.

Survivors and caregivers walk the first lap, with the crowd cheering them on. They are honored for their strength and courage with every step they take. It doesn't matter if you were diagnosed 10 days ago or 10 years ago. After the lap, survivors then proceed to the Survivor Tent for dinner.

Next it is time for each group and team to be announced and the walking is started. Once the evening is in full swing, teammates take turns walking the track to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer. Music, games, food, and fun continue all evening.

You will see luminaria, decorated with the names of loved ones, lining the track. After dark each luminaria is lit in the Luminaria Ceremony. Each light represents a life - a life taken by cancer, the life of a cancer survivor, or the life of someone still fighting the disease. It is a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve, but also offers comfort and hope, a light in the darkness. You can purchase luminaria for $10 each, to honor, support, or remember a loved one.

Last, but certainly not least, participate in the closing ceremony at midnight. Join hands together in a circle and celebrate accomplishments made and recognize that the fight will keep going until the world is free from cancer.

Relay For Life of Northern DuPage County and NW Cook County especially welcomes participants from Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Itasca, Roselle, Schaumburg, and Streamwood.
