Green Drinks McHenry County to explore solar lifestyle June 5

On Wednesday, June 5, Carolyn Campbell and Carl Edstrom will speak on "Solar Lifestyle" at the next meeting of Green Drinks McHenry County from 5 to 7 p.m. at Duke's Alehouse & Kitchen, upstairs, 110 N. Main St. in Crystal Lake.

On the first Wednesday of each month, the public is invited to gather for a talk and Q&A on environmental issues and to network with other sustainably minded people and professionals.

Always interested in finding ways to make their household and lives more sustainable, Crystal Lake residents Carolyn Campbell and Carl Edstrom knew they wanted to install solar panels on their home when the time was right. First, however, they needed to replace their 26-year-old furnace and air conditioner. A couple of encounters with the benefits of geothermal heating and cooling systems let them to become the first homeowners in Crystal Lake to install such a system in 2016.

Over the next few years, they followed that up by adding solar panels to their roof, and, finally, replacing their 20-year-old minivan with an electric car. Lyn and Carl will share their path to a mostly solar-powered lifestyle, and what they have learned about the pros and cons of each component along the way.

Additional parking is available at the train station. To be added to the Green Drinks email list, send a note to GreenDrinksMC@gmail.com or "like" www.facebook.com/GreenDrinksMcHenryCounty.
