April 18 and 20: CLC literary publications to hold readings/receptions
The literary arts are thriving at the College of Lake County, and to celebrate the writing and artistic talents represented in CLC's two annual literary publications, "Willow Review" and "Prairie Voices," readings will be held April 18 and 20. Additionally, the college will celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday April 26.
All events are free and open to the public and will be held at the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Copies of the new issues of the literary magazines will be available for sale at the readings or Lancer Book Stop stores.
From 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 in Room A013, "Prairie Voices," CLC's student literary/art journal, will host a reception honoring the students whose work was published. This year's issue includes short stories, essays and poems from 39 writers and visual art by 30 students.
"Many of these students are published for the very first time and have chosen thought-provoking themes to explore in their writing," said Dr. Nicholas Schevera, CLC English professor and editor. Themes in the 110-page book include valor, romance and a sense of place. For details, call the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division at (847) 543-2040.
On Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m., the "Willow Review" literary magazine will hold a reading and reception in Room A013. Contributors to this year's award-winning literary magazine will read from their original poetry and prose. The 2017 Illinois featured author is Scott Eagan, a graduate student in creative writing at Columbia College. Eagan is presently working on "Infinite Horizons," a novel of connected short stories. Besides "Willow Review," he has published in "Goreyesque" and "Hair Trigger."
"Willow Review" editors selected four of its 22 authors for $100 cash prizes. The 2017 poetry prizes were awarded to Kelley Jean White and Carol Frith. Kathryn Brown Ramsperger won for fiction and Kristin Lieberman won for non-fiction. "Willow Review" is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Its editor is Michael Latza, CLC English professor.
On Wednesday, April 26 from 1-4 p.m. in the Student Commons, CLC's Literary Arts Society will celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday Bash. Students and community members are welcome to perform famous Shakespearean plays, poems and works.
