CLC art gallery presents quilted scenes in 'Forgotten Narratives' exhibit
Jeana Eve Klein, a fiber artist from North Carolina, will present an exhibit of colorful quilts that recall scenes from abandoned houses, at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art at the College of Lake County.
"Forgotten Narratives" opens Friday, March 3 and runs through April 1. The exhibit will kick off with a reception March 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the gallery, located on CLC's Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. The opening night reception, which is free and open to the public, will include refreshments and live music by the Anderson Nordmark Duo.
Klein draws her inspiration from abandoned houses, where she "spies on" people who once lived there, watching them through the telescope of time.
"Later in my studio, I digitally merge and manipulate the photographic evidence scavenged from these forgotten homes," Klein writes in the exhibit catalog. "I then break these images apart and print them piecemeal on recycled fabric: scraps from my late grandmother's church quilting group, each with its own forgotten history. I stitch the pieces together to create compositional wholes before adding my own speculative story in acrylic paint. In the end, each piece is no longer image alone, but is image and object in quilt form."
The artist is an associate professor of fibers in the art department at Appalachian State University and was a 2014 recipient of the Craft Artist Fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council. Images of Klein's work have appeared in "American Craft" and "Surface Design Journal." She received a Foundations Fellows grant, two University Research Council Grants and five undergraduate research assistantships, all supported by Appalachian State University.
