Fox River Shiver jumps off at noon Sunday

The third annual Fox River Shiver kicks off Sunday, March 1, at the Broken Oar Beach on the banks of the Fox River in Port Barrington. Fearless, costume clad volunteers gather every year to brave the icy waters and frigid air for charity.

Hundreds of spectators arrive by car and snowmobile every year and line the shores, piers and the Skydeck to cheer on the courageous jumpers. Team representation by local businesses on the lower Fox River and the Fleet 17 Boat Club also help to not only raise funds for the event, but to bring awareness to the 17-mile lower Fox River community.

The festivities for the fun-filled day kick off at noon in the heated tent with the VIP pre-party, followed by the Shiverer parade down to the beach, the main event, with the post party and live entertainment immediately following. Awards for best costumes, best team concept, most money raised by an individual or team, and best lower river business presence are awarded every year.

Teams, individuals and lower river businesses collect pledge money from friends, family and customers to sponsor them to take the "plunge" for One Small Voice Foundation benefitting Lurie Children's Hospital. Broken Oar adds their proceeds from sales for the day in hopes to exceed last year's funds raise of more than $10,000.

The Broken Oar is at 614 Rawson Bridge Road, Port Barrington. Visit www.brokenoar.com for more details.
