Local Lions donate $1,600 to help two needy seniors
Lions Club of Burr Ridge-Hinsdale-Oak Brook continued their sponsorship of the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) Senior Citizen Project (SCP) recently by donating $1,600 to two of the needy seniors in the program. The SCP gives monthly grocery deliveries to improvised seniors in the DuPage and Kane County area.
This isn't the first time that this specific Lion's Club has sponsored HSP through donations. Since 2006, they have given HSP monetary and gift in kind donations. In the past these donations have supported the Feed the Kids program and as mentioned before, the SCP. The children in Feed the Kids come from families who are living at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. These children go without their proper nutrition during the summer months where they don't receive the subsidized lunches provided for them through the school lunch program. Feed the Kids combats this malnourishment during the summertime by giving these children and their families deliveries of healthy, nutritious groceries during the months of June, July and August.
The SCP is the other program from HSP that Lions Club of Burr Ridge-Hinsdale-Oak Brook has been supporting through generous donations since 2006. The seniors in the SCP are impoverished and cannot be helped financially by their families. On top of being unsupported financially, they often have medical conditions which prevent them from being mobile. All of the seniors in the program are severely impoverished, and buying groceries that are beneficial to their health is out of the question.
The purpose of the SCP is to alleviate the physical and psychological affects of poverty. Through the monthly deliveries, the seniors receive the groceries which provide the nutrition they need to help combat their malnourishment and crippling impoverishment.
The Senior Citizen Project combats this severe impoverishment and malnourishment by giving these seniors monthly deliveries of groceries The needy seniors sponsored through the donation will receive a selection of 15 nourishing fruits and vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 6 bags of non-perishable food, 3 loaves of Pepperidge Farm bread, 2 bags of paper products (paper towels, facial tissue, and toilet paper), and personal care items, delivered straight to their door every month. The 121 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift, gifts at Christmas time, and much needed household items on their “wishlist.” The program provides the seniors the opportunity to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, in the face of the financial and health burdens they face.
About The Humanitarian Service Project:
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,636 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 100 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 121 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
