Tosh victories for Palatine, Conant
Palatine and Conant each earned first-round pool play wins in the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic hosted by York on Wednesday.
Palatine got a season-best 29 points from sophomore guard Roosevelt Smart in a 79-31 victory over UIC Prep.
Chris Macahon and Dondre Watson had 10 apiece and Josh Baldus had 9 for the Pirates (8-4), who meet Riverside-Brookfield in second-round play at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Conant had a thriller against St. Ignatius in a 34-33 decision. Senior guard Robert Hudson led the way for the Cougars (7-4) with 11 points.
Next up for Conant is Lane Tech at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
St. Patrick 76, Rolling Meadows 62: Matt Dolan produced a season-best 16 points and had 9 rebounds, but the Mustangs (3-9) came up short against the team seeded No. 2 in Hinsdale South’s tournament.
Rolling Meadows will meet Wheaton North at 11:45 a.m. Thursday in second-round action.
Schaumburg wins by forfeit: The Saxons’ first-round game in the Hinsdale South tournament was scheduled to be played against Graves County, Kent., but blizzard conditions prevented Schaumburg’s opponent from making the game. Schaumburg squared its record at 5-5.
Loyola 78, Wheeling 39: The Ramblers made 11 of 20 3s and finished at 58.3 percent shooting from the field to claim a first-round victory at Wheeling’s Hardwood Classic.
Juniors Jack Morrissey and James Clarke were the only Loyola scorers in double figures, but both had 20 points.
Jeremy Stephani had 11 points and Nick Ricciardi had 9 for Wheeling (3-10), which meets Vernon Hills in a 9 a.m. Thursday game.
Loyola advances to meet Niles North at 5:30 p.m. in the championship bracket.
Crystal Lake South 63, Elk Grove 51: The Gators hit the Grenadiers with a 24-point first quarter and managed to stay in front the rest of the way in tournament play at Jacobs.
Austin Amann had 12 points for the Grenadiers, Joell Melendez had 10 and Jake Gatziolis 7 as Elk Grove (7-5) fell to 1-1 in tournament pool play.
Max Meitzler had a game-high 18 points for Crystal Lake South (4-5).
Glenbard North 91, Buffalo Grove 58: Luke Potnick scored a team-best 19 points to go with 12 from Steve Soifer and 11 from Andrew Apel, but the Bison found themselves outscored in first-round play at Elgin. Buffalo Grove (5-7) meets Islamic Foundation in second-round play Thursday morning.
Rockford East 73, Hoffman Estates 44: The Hawks (1-10) drew a tough first-round opponent and will face Harlan in second-round play Thursday morning.
