Libertyville completes perfect Lake run

Libertyville’s girls volleyball team wrapped up the North Suburban Conference Lake Division championship Wednesday night with a 25-15, 26-24 win over visiting Lake Forest.

The win on senior night hiked the Wildcats’ record to 20-4 and completed a 6-0 run for them through the NSC Lake. Several seniors contributed to the victory that clinched Libertyville’s second division title in three years.

Brooke Donovan contributed 2 aces and 9 digs, while Kristen Webb had 19 digs. Cindy Zhou dished out 16 assists. Taylor Zant and Julia Smagacz registered 7 and 5 kills, respectively, and Haley Becker chipped in three for the Wildcats. Dana Kym slammed a pair of kills.

Vernon Hills d. Antioch: Shannon Nugent had 6 kills and 3 blocks, and Jenn Claussen also pounded 6 kills for the Cougars in their 25-19, 25-16 win.

Jasmine Tamalunas served 13 of 15 with an ace and set 28 of 31 with 8 assists for Vernon Hills, which improved to 11-17 and 4-1 in the North Suburban Prairie Division. Erin Munoz and Nugent (1 ace) served 9 of 9 and 7 of 7, respectively. Tori Smith was 6-of-6 serving and 23-of-24 setting with 6 assists.

“We have been spending a lot of time working on defense, and it paid off tonight,” Cougars coach Abbie Gutzmer said. “Our team defense was spot-on, and we were able to capitalize on offense. Also, (we had) another good day serving.”

Antioch (17-11, 3-2) received 3 kills from Madeline Johnson. Sam Falco added 3 blocks and 2 kills, and Marissa Grant served 3 aces.

“Not a good night for the Sequoits,” Antioch coach Glen Heitman said. “We made the game too easy for Vernon Hills with over 30 unforced errors.”

Lakes d. Grant: A monster match from Emily Aigner propelled the Eagles to a 27-25, 20-25, 25-19 win that lifted their record to 17-5 and 5-0 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

Aigner had 17 kills, 3 blocks, 14 digs and 1 ace. Sarah Horner added 8 kills and 15 digs for Lakes.

Grant got 11 kills from Brooke Buckley. Mallory Gizowski and Anna Panasenko each had 4 blocks. Gizowski and Beka Couch added 5 kills apiece, and Taylor Rossi served 5 aces. Gizowski had 3 aces.

Zion-Benton d. Mundelein: Ashley Dolin and Yasmeen Johnson each had 3 kills for the Mustangs in their 25-17, 25-23 loss.

Madi Wilcox delivered 3 aces and dished out 11 assists for Mundelein (7-15, 1-5) in its North Suburban Lake finale.
