Hungry Senior Fed For One Year Through Generous Giving
Committed to their mission statement, Service over Self, the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn recently donated $800 to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of Carol Stream for their Senior Citizen Project. This donation will be used to sponsor one of the 120 needy seniors with a year-round monthly, 90 pound delivery of groceries and personal care items. The Senior Citizen Project is designed to provide seniors who suffer under the burden of poverty with nutritious food and other support to maintain healthy lifestyles. The Glen Ellyn based club has been supporting this program consecutively for the past three years helping to alleviate the sufferings of those living in poverty.
Since being chartered in 1943, the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn has been committed to both international and local initiatives to improve health, education and help out those in need. Among the numerous projects they run or support, are scholarships for local and international students, and Rotary International's goal to rid the world of Polio. Other than the Humanitarian Service Project, the club also supports a number of other local charities, such as Children's Resource Center and Bridge Communities.
Founder and Executive Director, Karole Kettering, is grateful to have a ongoing partnership with the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn. “We are so thankful to the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn for their steadfast support over so many years by helping HSP to relieve the stress of seniors living in poverty by keeping them from going hungry. Their work with HSP and many other local organizations shows their strong commitment to their neighbors in the community.”
The needy senior sponsored by the Glen Ellyn Rotary is one of 120 seniors served by HSP's Senior Citizen Project. Through the project, needy seniors receive a monthly delivery that includes over 15 selections of fresh fruits and vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 5 grocery bags of non-perishables, 2 bags of paper products, containing items such as toilet paper, tissue, and personal care items. A sponsorship of $70/month for a senior also includes monthly gifts from a secret-pal (a community donor), gifts at Christmas time and a monthly meal delivered by volunteers. The seniors in HSP's program also receive other benefits such as free eye glasses referrals, and access to reduced cost denistry and hearing aids.

About The Humanitarian Service Project
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 90 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
