Prospect goes extras to win
A year ago Prospect won a dramatic extra-inning game over Warren in a Class 4A baseball sectional championship game.
On Saturday morning it was just a tuneup for the postseason when they met in a nonconference game in Gurnee. But 4 innings of shutout relief by junior Alec Backes made sure Prospect came out on top again 4-2 in 11 innings.
The Knights (13-17) had 15 hits as Jack Landwehr and Eric Krohm went 3-for-5, Shane Joyce had 2 hits and 2 RBI and Dan Kavanaugh and A.J. Compton had 2 hits.
Hersey sweeps Clemente: Brad Moore took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as Hersey (23-7) completed a nonconference sweep of Clemente 7-1 and 7-0. Moore had 9 strikeouts and 1 walk in the second game and Pat Nix won Game 1.
Trevor Haas went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI in the opener and David Milligan went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI in Game 2.
Hoffman Estates sweeps Ridgewood: Ethan Bloom and Danny Barela earned the victories as Hoffman Estates (15-15) swept a nonconference doubleheader. Jimmy Ward went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener and Lance Berko, Bloom and Mike Gordon had 2 hits apiece in Game 2.
Barrington 3, Lake Forest 1: Six strong innings by Dylan Balogh helped Barrington (17-13) end a five-game losing streak. Balogh had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk and Frank Waliczek earned the save.
Ryan Lidge went 2-for-3 and Waliczek and Scott Nelson had RBI.
St. Viator 5, Marian Catholic 4: A 2-run rally in the bottom of the seventh gave St. Viator the East Suburban Catholic Conference victory. Joe Rossi, Anthony Ferrante and Crhis Myjak all had 2 hits and Tim McElroy got the win in relief.
Lake Park 6, Buffalo Grove 3: Jake Monson doubled for BG (13-18) in the nonconference loss.
Mundelein 10, Fremd 2: Matt Wisniewski doubled for Fremd (17-13) in the nonconference loss.
