Conant clinches MSL West crown

After going 37 years without playing in a Mid-Suburban League softball championship game, suddenly Conant is in it for the second time in a row.

The defending MSL champs clinched the MSL West on Wednesday with a 5-0 decision over Schaumburg as Wisconsin-Green Bay-bound senior Briana Cavin threw a 3-hitter with 5 strikeouts.

The Cougars improved to 26-2 overall and 14-0 in the West, 3 games ahead of Fremd (24-6, 11-3) with two to play.

Conant will host MSL East champ Elk Grove (23-5, 12-2) a week from today at 4:30 p.m.

Brian Cavin also went 2-for-3 at the plate with 1 run and an RBI while sophomore second baseman Rachel O’Malley belted her seventh homer of the season.

Other top hitters for Conant were Miranda Cavin (2-for-3, RBI), Allie Bauch (2-for-4) and Kim Jacobson (double).

Losing pitcher Alyssa Lancaster (5-7), Courtney Plackner (double) and Dana Giannelle (double) led the offense for Schaumburg (14-12, 7-7).

Barrington 15, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn.): Loren Krzysko (3-for-3, home run, triple, single, walk) led visiting Barrington (25-7, 9-5) as the junior third baseman missed the cycle by a double.

Other top hitters for the Fillies were Jordan Wekony (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 4 RBI), Kelsey Kazmier (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), Danielle Di Iorio (2-for-4, RBI), Erin Ward (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Maggie O’Hara (double).

Senior Emma Woods (7-0) threw a 3-hitter with 4 strikeouts.

Alex Tuminaro, Alexis Filler and Kajal Dalal had the hits for Hoffman (4-21-1) as Hawks pitcher Charlotte Allan struck out six.

Prospect 2, Buffalo Grove 1 (11 inn.): Prospect (10-22, 6-8) scored the winning run in the top of the 11th when Jill Sadowski led off with a double and her pinch runner Meghan Doyle scored when Amy Graham (3-for-4) reached on an error.

Senior Hanna Lythberg (7-11), who pitched the final 1 innings to get the win in relief of sophomore Michelle Korf, singled home Sarah Scaccia for the Knights’ first run in the third inning.

BG (9-19, 5-9) tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth when pinch runner Kristina Dakas scored on a passed ball.

Bison pitcher Julia Camardo (7-13) struck out four and walked two in 11 innings.

ElK Grove 14, Wheeling 0 (5 inn.): Dani Goranson (18-4) struck out four in the first two innings and Andrea Starr threw the final three scoreless innings for Mid-Suburban East champ Elk Grove (23-5, 12-2).

Wheeling’s only hit was a single up the middle by Sara Kern in the fourth inning with one out.

Becca Walz (3-for-3, triple, double, 4 RBI), Carly Danek (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Becca Maher (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI), Starr (2-for-3) and Goranson (double) were top hitters for the Grens.

Junior pitcher Taylor Vasey struck out two for Wheeling (4-19, 2-12).

Hersey 2, Rolling Meadows 0: Junior Sarah Platt (8-7) threw a 3-hitter with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk for visiting Hersey (14-15, 5-9).

Alex Tinaglia (2-for-4) led off the game with a homer run over the left-center field fence and that proved to be the only run Platt would need.

Haley Henriksen also went 2-for-3 for Huskies, who received a sacrifice fly from Angela Schmiederer to score Platt for the second run. Melissa Cecala had the other hit for Hersey.

Josie Suchecki (double), Chloe Prodanovic and Sam Anderson had the hits for Meadows (15-14, 6-8). Mustangs junior Sara Brunlieb (12-6) struck out seven and walked two.
