Dramatic comeback by Rolling Meadows
Rolling Meadows was in danger of suffering a loss to Buffalo Grove on Wednesday which would damage its hopes of staying in the Mid-Suburban East baseball race.
But the Mustangs (15-10, 7-4) tied the game on Mike Olson’s 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning and won it 6-5 when Matt Dennis tripled to lead off the eighth and scored on John Burkiewicz’s sacrifice fly. That kept them a game behind East co-leaders Hersey and Prospect.
Olson went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and Jack Milas got the victory with two innings of 1-hit relief. Ryan Schumi went 3-for-3, Jake Monson went 2-for-4 and Jake Fanella homered for BG (10-15, 5-6).
Hersey 7, Elk Grove 0: Trevor Haas threw a complete-game 2-hitter to keep Hersey (18-4, 8-3) in a tie for the MSL East lead with Prospect. Haas had 3 strikeouts and no walks and threw 51 of his 79 pitches for strikes and Sean Reszotko and Erik Stoltzner had 2 hits apiece.
Elk Grove (12-12, 4-7) trailed only 2-0 when Hersey scored 5 runs in the sixth.
Fremd 7, Conant 3: Keith Browning went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead a 13-hit attack and Lee Breitzman threw a complete game as Fremd (15-8, 8-2) did all of its scoring in the first two innings and opened a 2½-game lead on Barrington in the MSL West. Jack Andersen had 2 hits and 2 RBI and Matt Wisniewski, Connor Bieda and Danny Haduch had 2 hits apiece.
Kerry Hickerson went 3-for-4 and Nick Monelli and Dan Behof had 2 hits for Conant (9-10, 5-5). The two teams are scheduled to complete their game which was suspended at 2-2 after 10 innings on Monday at 4:30 p.m. today at Fremd.
Palatine 5, Barrington 1: Kurt Becker threw a 3-hitter and didn’t allow an earned run and Eric Scheuermann homered for Palatine (10-17, 5-6) in the MSL West win. Becker had 5 strikeouts and 2 walks and Scheuermann and Scott Schneberger had 2 hits apiece.
Frank Waliczek had an RBI single in the first for Barrington (16-9, 6-5).
Prospect 17, Wheeling 5 (5 inn.): Dan Kavanaugh went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI and Kevin Krohm doubled and had 4 RBI as Prospect (11-14, 8-3) remained in a tie for the MSL East lead. Jack Landwehr, who set the school’s career strikeout record in Tuesday’s win, went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Brad Gerdes and Nico Witanen had 2 hits apiece against visiting Wheeling (1-23, 0-11).
Marist 3, St. Viator 0: St. Viator (14-11, 2-5) had only 3 hits as it was shut out for the second straight time by Marist in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game in Chicago.
