Foley delivers for Waliczek, Barrington
One swing changed Monday’s Mid-Suburban West pitcher’s duel between Barrington’s Frank Waliczek and Palatine’s Eric Scheuermann.
That swing from Barrington’s Aaron Foley came to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. The ball landed over the left-field fence and gave Waliczek a 1-0 victory.
Waliczek threw a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts and 2 walks as he threw 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes. He got out of a first-and-second jam with two outs in the second and retired the last seven hitters for the Broncos (16-8, 6-4).
Scheuermann threw a 3-hitter with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk and 53 of his 70 pitches were strikes for Palatine (9-17, 4-6).
Buffalo Grove 8, Rolling Meadows 4: BG senior Robert Hawkins’ first varsity win also knocked Meadows out of first place in the MSL East. Hawkins went 5 innings and didn’t allow a run in the final three as he left with an 8-3 lead.
Richie Zirngibl went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI to give the Bison (10-14, 5-5) and Hawkins the support they needed. Back-to-back doubles by Jimmy Pinakidis and Zirngibl and an RBI single by Jake Fanella put them up 5-3 in the second and Jake Monson had a 3-run double in the fourth.
Mike Olson went 3-for-3 and Matt Hendricks had a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the second for Meadows (14-10, 6-4).
Conant 2, Fremd 2 (susp., 10 inn.): Darkness suspended the MSL West game between Conant (9-9, 5-4) and Fremd (14-8, 7-2) after 10 innings. It will resume in the top of the 11th at 4:30 p.m. today at Fremd.
Nick Blaha had 7 strikeouts in 10 innings for Conant and Jack Andersen had 9 strikeouts in 9 innings for Fremd. Both pitchers allowed only 1 earned run.
Fremd took a 2-1 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Keith Browning (2-for-4) and an RBI single by Andersen. Blaha got a strikeout and groundout to end a one-out threat in the fifth after Browning singled and Josh Jywaook (2-for-5) doubled.
Kerry Hickerson had an RBI groundout in the first and Anthony Forte’s one-out single in the fourth led to Conant’s tying run. Andersen retired 14 in a row before one-out singles in the ninth by Blaha and Hickerson.
Marist 1, St. Viator 0 (10 inn.): Gunnar Kay got a no-decision with 8 strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings for St. Viator (14-10, 2-4) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference home loss. Chris Myjak and Mike McGrath had 2 hits apiece for the Lions.
MSL postponements: Games postponed to 4:30 p.m. today were Hoffman Estates at Schaumburg in the MSL West and Prospect at Wheeling in the MSL East.
