Extra effort required for Rams’ 10th straight win

The Grayslake Central baseball team’s 10th straight win didn’t come easily Friday.

The visiting Rams scored 5 runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Johnsburg 6-1 in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play.

Grayslake Central improved to 16-5 and 10-1 in the FVC.

In the five-run eighth, Sean Boban and Ryan Fontana each drove in 2 runs with singles.

Christian Edwards tossed the final 6 innings, allowing no runs with 8 strikeouts in picking up the win.

“Christian was outstanding,” Rams coach Troy Whalen said. “He kept us in the game, and we had some nice at-bats in the eighth inning.”

Round Lake 7, Zion-Benton 6: Tyler Sanchez’s two-out double in the bottom of the fifth scored Antonio Carranza to put the Panthers up for good in the North Suburban Conference crossover.

Round Lake got 2 hits apiece from Sanchez (2 RBI), Carranza (3 runs, walk), Randy Eanos and Anthony Gutierrez (double, 2 runs, RBI, walk).

Anthony Burton pitched 5 innings for the win, and Danny Trujillo earned the save. Trujillo struck out two and did not allow a run in his 1 innings.

Antioch 11, Lake Zurich 3: Joe Gregory doubled twice and knocked in three runs, and Mitch Everett struck out eight in earning the complete-game in the North Suburban crossover.

It was the first win for Everett (1-1). Antioch (11-6) got 2 hits each from Matt DeJong (2 RBI) and Adam Warner (RBI), as well.

Lake Zurich fell to 14-8.

Wauconda 8, Libertyville 7: David Diol’s 2-run single in the top of the seventh highlighted a 3-run frame, as the Bulldogs pulled out the North Suburban crossover.

Jeff Lindberg was 2-for-4 and scored a run for Wauconda (15-7). Ryan Gick earned the win in relief.

Libertyville (14-7) got doubles from Nick Coutre, Evan Skoug and Kevin McQuillen.

Grant 10, Lake Forest 3: At Lake Forest, Jake Ring’s 2 stolen bases gave him 21 for the season, and Jared Helmich (3 RBI) and Simeon Lucas each had 2 hits for the Bulldogs in the North Suburban crossover.

Mike Lutz pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 earned run, as Grant improved to 14-6.

Grayslake North 3, Hampshire 2: Nick Carmody had 2 hits and 2 RBI for the host Knights in the Fox Valley Fox Division game.

Carl Russell’s double was Grayslake North’s only extra-base hit.
