Schaumburg tops Palatine in wild one

Schaumburg and Palatine showed there will still be a few slugfests as they combined for 27 runs in Monday’s Mid-Suburban West baseball opener.

But the Saxons (8-5, 1-0) hung on for a 14-13 victory by making sure it didn’t give the visiting Pirates (4-11, 0-1) any extra help.

“It was a tough day with the sun and wind blowing hard to right field,” said Schaumburg coach Paul Groot. “I’m mostly proud of the fact we didn’t make an error on a tough day.”
