Briana Cavin pitches Conant to big win

Briana Cavin did it all as Conant’s softball team improved to 6-1 with a 14-0 victory over visiting Maine South (3-4) in five innings.

The senior right-hander (6-1) threw a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and RBI.

Other top hitters for the Cougars were Miranda Cavin (2-for-3, triple, double, 2 RBI), Allie Bauch (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Kim Jacobson (3-for-3, double, RBI), Rachel O’Malley (2-for-3, double, RBI), Sarah Thompson (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Megan Reff (double).

“It was a great effort,” said Cougars coach CathyAnn Smith. “Everyone contributed. Briana led us offensively, getting on base every time she batted, and defensively with the shutout.”

Elk Grove 6, Lane Tech 1: Devan Parkison (3-for-3, double, 2 RBI), Dani Goranson (1-for-2, home run), Megan Keegan (2-run single) and Elisa Payne (RBI single) were top offensive players for Elk Grove (7-0).

Senior Andrea Starr (4-0) struck out eight and threw a 3-hitter for the Grens, who received a home run over the right-center field fence by Goranson to start the bottom of the first inning.

Fremd 2, Glenbrook North 1: SeniorRachel Doering (5-0) threw a 7-hitter with 4 strikeouts to lift host Fremd to its eighth win of the season without a loss.

Mandi Matsumoto (1-for-2, 2 walks), Brittany Ciura (1-for-3 , 1 run), Megan Hubbard (1-for-3) and Leigh Farina (1 hit, 1 run, 1 stolen base, walk) paced the Vikes’ offense.

Buffalo Grove 9, Grant 1: Freshman Julia Camardo (2-3) was the winning pitcher and she went 3-for-3 (home run, double, single, 3 RBI, hit by pitch) as visiting Buffalo Grove (4-5) won the nonconference game.

“We hit really well,” said Bison coach Jamie Paul. “I was really pleased.”

Other top hitters for BG were Amanda Salzman (3-for-4, 2 doubles), Erin Barton (2-for-4, double) and Jessie Lazzara (double).

Camardo struck out 11 and walked only one. Her first career homer was a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning.

Rolling Meadows 10, Huntley 7: Natalie Cannizzo (2-for-5, RBI), Josie Suchecki (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Sam Anderson (3-for-4, RBI), Hannah Whidden (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Sarah Caprio (2-for-4, RBI) led the offense for visiting Meadows (6-2) in the nonconference game.

Anderson belted a leadoff homer in the third inning and Whidden did the same in the seventh. It was Anderson’s fourth homer this season.

Whidden (1-0) went all seven innings to record her first career win with a strikeout and one walk.

Barrington 17, Lakes 2 (6 inn.): Visiting Barrington (9-2) exploded for 19 hits, led by Ally McLaughlin (3-for-, 2 run), Maggie O’Hara (3-for-4, triple, 3 RBI), Kelsey Kazmier (2-for-5, triple, RBI), Loren Krzysko (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI), Raegan Fingerman (2-for-4, 3 runs, RBI), Tess Bolger (2-for-4, home run, 4 RBI) and Morgan Olszewski (2-for-4, triple, 4 RBI).

Junior Cassidy Kraimer (4-1) struck out six and walked one in the first four innings while senior Emma Woods recorded 4 strikeouts in the last two innings.

Ten Fillies had hits.

Leyden 10, Hinsdale Central 0 (6 innings): Jen Hall (3-for-4, double, 3 runs, 2 RBI, Denise Moran 3-for-4 (double, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Melissa Dziadosz (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI) and Dana Sullivan 2-4 (double, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led the offense for Leyden (10-1).

Senior ace Morgan Maize (8-1) struck out 11 and walked one in 6 innings.

St. Viator 7, Wildwood Catholic Academy (N.J) 4: On Tuesday, the Lions were led by sophomore Sam Hogan, who had 2 hits 2 RBI while also notching the win in relief over the New Jersey high school in the Florida tournament.

Alex Flasch (2-for-4) led of the Lions’ 4-run fourth inning with a double and scored Hogan’s single. After Gina Mastrodomenico and Morgan Presslak walked, Hogan and Mastrodomenico scored on wild pitches. The fourth run came when Lauren Prazuch provided her first varsity hit and RBI.

Freshman Krystal Harris (2-for-4) tripled in Colleen Dunne to provide for an insurance run in the sixth inning. Andreya Delarco also got her first varsity hit in the game and made the catch for the final out.

The Lions are playing four games this week at the Disney World ESPN sports complex.
