Softball/Lake County roundup

Junior Kayla Uhwat hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Grant’s softball team to a 6-5 win over visiting Palatine in Game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader Saturday.

The Bulldogs then completed the sweep, capturing a 9-4 decision in Game 2.

Rachel DePouw, who struck out eight in earning the win in the second game, forced extra innings in the opener by belting a 2-run homer with two out in the seventh.

Uhwat’s game-winning base hit scored Jessica Catinella.

Vanessa Valadez had 3 hits in the first game and two more in the second for Grant (5-1). Taylor Rossi and sophomore Caitlin Moran doubled in Game 2. In the opener, Moran notched the win to improve to 3-0.

Round Lake 20, CICS/Northtown 5: Kristin Pierce pitched around some defensive miscues with 9 strikeouts and added a 3-run triple for the host Panthers (2-3).

Ashley Carter was 3-for-3 and scored 3 runs, and every spot in the Panther batting order contributed at least one hit and one run scored.

Wauconda splits: Alex Kinnamon’s walk-off single scored Megan Luchowski in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Bulldogs an 8-6 with over visiting Larkin and split of the nonconference doubleheader.

Larkin won the opener 13-5, despite Wauconda getting a home run from Luchowski and doubles from Lexie Redmann and Emily Holub. Luchowski was also hit by a pitch and finished 3-for-3. Redmann went 2-for-3.

Redmann doubled again and homered, as well, in Game 2. She was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored, while also earning the win. Luchowski went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

In the Wauconda seventh, Luchowski led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Kennedy Wright. An error put runners on the corners before a Bulldog fanned for the second out. The brought up Kinnamon, who smacked a single up the middle for the game-winning hit.

The split left Wauconda with a 4-4 record.

Barrington 10, Antioch 1: At Barrington’s Fields of Dreams, Katie Phillips and Amber Mysliwiec had doubles for the Sequoits.

Barrington slugger Loren Krzysko homered.
