COD hosts Japan Symposium March 21-22
The College of DuPage Asia Committee will host a Japan Symposium Wednesday and Thursday, March 21 and 22, at the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.
The event includes a display of student-created posters on the theme “Japan: Overcoming the Tsunami.” The competition is open to COD students. Registration for the contest is required by Monday, March 12. For more information, contact Professor Lubna Haque.
Entries will be on display from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 21, in the Atrium of the Health and Science Center. Winners will be announced Thursday, March 22.
The symposium's main activities are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the Student Resource Center, Room 2800. Scheduled events include a lecture by Norma M. Field, Robert S. Ingersoll Distinguished Service Professor in Japanese Studies in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Field will discuss “From Chicago to Fukushima” at 9:40 a.m.
Jason Christopher Jones, assistant professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will present “Ghosts and Other Creepy Crawlies in Japanese Horror Cinema” at 11 a.m.
Additional activities include an Aikido demonstration at 5:30 p.m. and a performance by Taiko Drummers at 7:30 p.m. A talent and fashion show and Hula dancing performances also are tentatively scheduled.
