Get your plate in shape during National Nutrition Month
In observance of National Nutrition Month in March, the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center offers the following tips to encourage healthy eating:
At least twice a week, make fish and seafood the protein on your plate.
Drink water instead of sugary drinks, sweetened teas or coffees. Choose 100 % juice.
Whether you are eating out, or at home, use portion control or smaller plates.
Cook and eat at home more often so you know what you are eating.
Track what you eat using a food journal or online food planner.
Experiment with healthy recipes and healthier ingredient substitutions.
Keep rinsed and cut up fruit and vegetables handy for grab and go snacks.
Choose fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt over cheese. Milk and yogurt are better sources of potassium and lower in sodium than cheese.
Season foods with spices or herbs rather than salt.
Use olive, canola or sunflower oils instead of butter or shortening when cooking.
“Don't forget that exercise and healthful eating are crucial to maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” said Irene Pierce, the Health Department's Executive Director. “Choose activities you enjoy like going for a walk with your family, joining a sports team, dancing or playing with your children. If you don't have a full 30 minutes, carve out 10 minutes three times a day. Every bit adds up and health benefits increase the more active you are."
