Harper offers free market outlook

In honor of the new year, Harper College is offering a free public mini-economics lesson aimed at untangling the confusion surrounding the general state of the economy, the financial market, and employment trends in 2012.

The “Market Update and Outlook” seminar, led by Jack Ablin, executive vice president and chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank, is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the Wojcik Conference Center on the College's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.

Ablin will break down complex economic and financial market concepts amid a continued down economy and headline-making economic news in Europe, and explore why history matters — especially when it comes to the economy.

Ablin has more than 25 years of experience in money management, and is responsible for establishing investment policy and strategy within the Personal Investment Management Group of Harris Private Bank.

He wrote the 2009 best-seller, “Reading Minds and Markets: Minimizing Risk and Maximizing Returns in a Volatile Global Marketplace,” and has been a professor of finance at Boston University's Graduate School of Management. He is a frequent contributor to CNBC, Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.

The market update is the latest event in the 2011-12 Harper Professional Advisors Seminar Series, a collection of free monthly information sessions led by industry professionals and sponsored by Harper's Educational Foundation.

To register or for a list of other free sessions, call (847) 925-6490 or visit harpercollege.edu/foundation.
