Fremd, Rolling Meadows maintain leads
Defending Mid-Suburban League champion Fremd retained its 2-game cushion in the MSL West with a 42-30 triumph at Conant on Tuesday night.
Senior Jessi Wiedemann scored 16 points to pace the Vikings (18-4, 7-0) who lead Schaumburg (12-11, 5-2) by 2 games with three to play.
Freshman Haley Gorecki added 11 points and Ashley McConnell 10 for Fremd.
Senior guard Ashley Bartuch scored 8 points while freshman Sidney O’Keefe and senior Natalie Kutrumanes each added 6 for Conant (7-16, 1-6).
The 42 points ties Fremd’s lowest of the season. Palatine and Loyola also held the Vikes to 42.
Rolling Meadows 65, Wheeling 47: Rolling Meadows (21-3, 7-0) maintained its perfect record in the MSL East as sophomores Jackie Kemph (22 points), Erin Glasgow (19 points) and Jenny Vliet (12) combined for 7 3-pointers to lead the way.
It was Meadows’ 19th straight win.
Senior Kellie Kuzmanic led Wheeling (6-16, 2-5) with 17 points while her freshman sister Deanna added 11 and freshman Hailey Dammeier 9.
Barrington 47, Hoffman Estates 31: Barrington senior guard Nicole Collins scored 19 points with 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals as host Barrington improved to 12-12 and 4-3 in the MSL West.
“Nicole had a good all-around game,” said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, whose team also received 12 points and 5 rebounds from sophomore Brooke Gunderson.
Gunderson and Collins each had 2 3-pointers.
“Brooke made some nice decisions offensively and had some nice buckets,” Barreiro added. “And Abby Taplett had a real nice defensive game as well. I thought the kids played a nice defensive game and came out fired up.”
Destinee Young paced Hoffman (8-14, 0-7) with 14 points.
Mary Pettit, Sara Burns and Selena Martinez had 3-pointers for the Hawks.
Lake Zurich 50, Maine West 45: Brittany Collins (17 points, 14 rebounds), Alexia Prosperi (11 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds) and Amanda Hoye (9) led visiting Maine West (8-14) in the Sweet 16 game.
“It was probably Alexia’s best game of the season,” said Warriors coach Derril Kipp, whose team faces Fenwick on Thursday. “And of course, Brittany was solid.”
West trailed 18-14 at half.
“We lost the game in the final 30 seconds of the first half,” Kipp said. “We had the lead and turned the ball over twice and they scored two layups.”
The Bears were 14 of 16 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Hersey 52, Elk Grove 39: It was the H & H scoring show again for Hersey, which improved to 15-10 and 4-3.
Seniors Jen Hall and Maggie Hogen (4 assists, 7 rebounds) each scored 14 points for the visiting Huskies while Corinne Busby chipped in 9. Teammate Renee Poulos and Meg Cerniglia (7 rebounds) each added 6.
“I thought Casey Weyhrich played well throughout the game,” said Hersey coach Mary Fendley of her junior guard. “She made good decisions, handled the ball well and played good defense — a very good all-around game.”
Diamond Boyd (12 points), Kelly Naughton (8 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Amber Lindfors (8 points) led Elk Grove (11-10, 2-6).
“We got their lead down to 5 points a few times in the second half,” said Elk Grove coach Ryan Kirkorsky. “But they are such a solid team. When you give up an offensive rebound or turn the ball over, they make you pay for it.
“I thought Kelly Naughton had a really solid game for us and Stephanie Solis gave us a big spark off the bench.”
