Lake County roundup
Lakes’ girls basketball team honored a fallen soldier and then went out and won a game Tuesday night.
The Eagles held off visiting Wauconda 44-33 in North Suburban Prairie Division action before a spirited crowd.
The night started with a moment of silence to remember all brave soldiers, including Christopher Patterson, 20, who gave his life fighting in Afghanistan on Jan. 6.
Patterson is the nephew of Lakes coach Pete Schneider and cousin to sophomore coach Christi Schneider.
“The administration called me to ask if it was OK and I thought it was a great tribute to the courage that Chris showed and all of the many brave young men and women serving,” Pete Schneider said. “The national anthem and moment of silence were hard to get through, knowing that just two years ago he was walking the halls of West Aurora High School.
“It was great getting to play a home game. We have played 17 games and before tonight only 2 home games. The fans showed up to support us and the girls played very hard.”
Lakes (7-10, 4-2) was led by Terese McMahon and Ashlee Cunningham with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Amanda Smith and Heather Hurlbut each scored 6 points, and Nicole Mogged had 5.
“It seemed like we were stuck on 37 forever,” Schneider said. “We went stagnant in the fourth quarter and began settling for outside jumpers on quick shots. We took a timeout and talked about moving the ball and being more patient. We changed up the offensive set and the kids started playing loose and attacking the rim.”
Defensively, Mogged and Dayna Olson provided a spark for the Eagles.
“Jaime does a great job with her kids,” Schneider said of Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis. “We knew they would be improved and they were. They worked the ball well and set great screens.
Wauconda (6-11, 1-6) was led by Diana Enriquez with 10 points and Lexi Redman with 8.
North Chicago 56, Grant 52: Brittany Glover scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, who led the North Suburban Prairie contest 11-7 after one quarter but trailed 24-23 at halftime and 37-35 after three.
Morgan Jahnke and Kassie Stimpson each had 9 points for Grant (4-13, 3-3).
Loyola 56, Carmel 50 (OT): The host Corsairs fell in overtime, as their record fell to 9-8 with their third straight loss.
