Streamwood beats Dundee-Crown in Chargers' tourney
Streamwood saved its best for last.
Trailing Dundee-Crown until 3:12 remained in the game, the Sabres used a crucial 11-0 run in the final quarter and rallied for a 46-42 win in the final game of the Dundee-Crown Girls Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday in Carpentersville.
"We made it a little more difficult than we needed to," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "We were a little more patient in the second half and played with more intensity on the defensive end. We finally got in the rythmn and shared the ball better."
Trailing D-C (0-4) by as many as 11 in the second half, the Sabres (3-2) whittled the Charger lead to 3, 36-33, after a layup from Holly Foret with 4:58 remaining in the game.
Led by 6 points from Foret, a 3-pointer from Jessica Cerda and a putback from Hannah McGlone, the Sabres steamrollered the stunned Chargers with an 11-0 run. Streamwood turned a 5-point deficit into a 6-point 42-36 advantage with 2:27 left in the contest. The Sabres took their first lead of the game 37-36 on a 12-footer from Foret with 3:12 left in the game.
The resilient Chargers climbed to within a point of the Sabres, 43-42, on a free throw by Florida Southern recruit Ali Sanders with 47 seconds left. But that was the last point the Chargers would score.
Streamwood sealed the win in the final 12 seconds with 2 free throws by Amanda Patterson and a free throw by Deja Moore.
"We came out flat in the third quarter and lost our intensity," said Dundee-Crown coach Michelle Russell. "The girls stuck with it and played hard, but you can't play 3 of 4 quarters and expect to beat a good team like Streamwood. We also missed a lot of free throws which hurt us. We didn't win a game in the tournament, but we were in 3 of the 4 games."
Foret paced Streamwood with 13 points while Cerda scored 12 with two 3-pointers. McGlone, who fouled out with 24 seconds left in the game, scored 12 with 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.
Sanders paced D-C with 22 points including three 3-pointers while Diamond Williams scored 10 points with 7 rebounds.
St. Edward 42, Dakota 35: Alex Lee led a balanced St. Edward attack with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Green Wave won for the third straight game at the Dakota tournament. Maddie Kerr added 9 points for St. Edward, Callie Johnson scored 8 and Katherine Von Ahnen had 8 rebounds. The Green Wave finishes the tournament Saturday with games against Class 1A state-ranked Freeport Aquin and River Ridge.
Cary-Grove 42, Rolling Meadows 30: Paige Lincicum scored 16 points and had 9 rebounds and Olivia Jakubicek had 13 points and 8 rebounds as the Trojans (2-2) won at the Turkey Thriller tournament at Lake Zurich.
