Fox Valley players eliminated at state

A few more wins came for Fox Valley girls tennis players at the IHSA state tournament Friday, but at the end of the day all of the area’s hopefuls had been eliminated from further contention for state championships.

Bartlett’s Jen Gates and Crystal Lake South’s Marisa Thome, the area’s remaining singles players in Friday’s action, each won a second-round match before being eliminated.

Gates defeated Megan Nguyen of Metamora 6-1, 6-1 before being sent home by Wheaton Warrenville South’s Keish Clousing 6-1, 6-2. Thome defeated Shanaz Daneshdoost of Carbondale 6-1, 6-4 and was then eliminated by Caroline Ryba of Glenbrook South 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play, Cary-Grove’s Beth Hughes/Arley Bayer won their suspended first-round match over Mallory Horton/Molly Mathes of Dunlap 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 before losing in the second round to Jessica Burns/Tess Severin of Edwardsville 6-1, 6-2. Elgin Academy’s Jordfan Kaufman/Lauren Ficken, who also had their first-round match on Thursday suspended by weather and darkness, lost that match on Friday to Kate Alloison/Zoe Kasiurak of Barrington 6-0, 6-0.

Jacobs’ Marcilyn Rowa/Lauren Steinkamp fell in the second round to Jenna Borzak/Jorie Fox of Deerfield 6-1, 7-6 (7), while the Golden Eagles’ Kassy Bernardo/Autumn Hackett lost in the second round to Michelle Kannenberg/Kathleen Felicelli of Carmel 6-2, 6-1.

Bartlett’s Jennjifer Parato/Gabby Gregorio lost in the second round to Kim Simmons/Madeline Carney of Benet 6-0, 6-2.

Crystal Lake South’s team of Kelsey Lakatash/Rachel Siemon defeated Jennie Gault/Nora Hughes of Loyola in the second round 6-4, 6-2, but then lost in the third round to Krissy Hamilton/Jackie Altansarnai of Hinsdale Central 6-0, 6-3.

The IHSA canceled the tournament back draw on Thursday night after all first-round matches could not be completed.
