Scouting girls tennis/Mid-Suburban League tournament

Where: Rolling Meadows, Palatine and Fremd

When: Tournament continues Thursday and Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Outlook: Barrington is on the hunt for a 17th consecutive MSL tourney title.Although key components in Kristy Dodge (graduation) and sophomore Heather Ciskowski (playing golf) were lost, the Fillies (14-6, 5-0) still managed after early season jitters to sweep the MSL West and East in crossover matches. Zoe Kasuriak and Kate Allison are the No. 1 doubles seed after sweeping through the MSL and coach Tracy Waters-Miller seeks strong performances from top singles players Lucia Stumbras and Roshni Sharma.

Buffalo Grove also struggled out the gate with a difficult schedule but took the MSL East and lost its only MSL match to the Fillies. The Bison have finished second in the MSL tourney the last seven seasons and the only MSL defeat for their No. 1 junior doubles team of Dana and Laura Goggin was to Barrington. Kristen Immen is 8-1 in the MSL at No. 2 singles and peaking at the right time, according to coach Kevin Schrammel.

Hersey coach Sharon Meintzer hopes to improve on last year’s seventh-place finish as freshman Sara Magmuson got the top seed at No. 3 singles. Rolling Meadows lost close three-set matches to Prospect, Buffalo Grove and Hersey but coach Jim Gumz saw his first doubles team of Jackie and Allie Kemph improve throughout the year.

The only singles player who went to state last year is Hoffman Estates No. 1 sophomore Courtney Lang. She was awarded the No. 1 seed and turned the corner when she beat Lake Park No. 1 Stephanie Lee 6-1, 6-0 to avenge a 6-2, 6-1 sectional loss.

Conant coach Jennifer Mogge is very encouraged with her team’s play and No. 1 senior singles player Alex Bahadri, sophomores Natalia Migdal at No. 2 and Nicole Zawacki at No. 3 all received first-round byes. The Cougars finished third in the MSL West.

Fremd senior Shannon Segin has come back from a knee injury in full force with senior teammate Maggie Lundholm, who was a state qualifier with doubles player Holly Kometer. Sophomore No. 3 singles Amy Byrne finished 5-0 in the MSL as Fremd went 4-1 in the MSL West.

Schaumburg (10th in 2010), Prospect (fourth in 2010), Palatine (tied for sixth in 2010) and Elk Grove (tied for 10th in 2010) seek clutch performances as they take their conference experience into sectionals next week.
