Harper offers parents homework help

Think you’re smarter than a fifth-grader? You might be surprised. Many parents have been out of school for years, making it easy to be stymied by the homework questions a child might lob their way.

Harper College this fall will offer help in the form of refresher math, reading and writing courses aimed specifically at bringing parents up to speed with the concepts their children are learning in class now — from basic equations and story problems to diagraming tricky sentences.

The “Study Skills: Math” and “Study Skills: Reading and Writing” classes also will give parents an overview of Illinois academic standards and the state’s process for testing students, and offer tips for helping with their child’s studies without doing the work for them.

“By learning the right ways to support your child, you can lend a hand with their assignments and also lay the groundwork for your student to focus on continued academic growth,” says Kevin Hahn, youth coordinator for Harper’s Continuing Education Department.

The classes, led by local teachers, run for 50 minutes at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. Saturday mornings, from Oct. 29 to Dec. 10. Tuition is $69, and the classes are open to all. To register or for information, call (847) 925-6300 or visit www.harpercollege.edu/ce.
