COD Library offers Fall SOS Workshops

The Library at College of DuPage is offering several free SOS Workshops this fall for students, staff and community members.

The free workshops are designed to give participants an overview of topics to help with research, social networking tools and library resources. All sessions and workshops meet in the Library, located on the second floor of the Student Resource Center, Room 3014, unless otherwise noted, at the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

Introduction to the Library for New Students is offered 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24; 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25; 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30; 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31; and 1 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1. Participants will learn how to find books, videos, CDs and other resources in the Library's collection.

How to Avoid Plagiarism is offered noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, and Wednesday, Dec. 7; 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 23; and 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. Participants will learn safeguards to prevent plagiarism and have the opportunity to use SafeAssign, a plagiarism prevention service.

APA Citing & Paper Formatting is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Nov. 30; 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, and Thursday, Nov. 10; and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. Participants will learn the basics of citing sources and formatting papers in the American Psychological Association's style.

Research Basics: The Research Process is offered 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15; 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25; and 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7. This beginner workshop highlights the basics of library research. Participants learn how to navigate the COD Library and find books and articles on various topics.

MLA Citing & Paper Formatting is offered noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, and Wednesday, Nov. 16; 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 7; and 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3. This workshop highlights citations and formatting in the Modern Language Association's style.

Research Basics: Finding & Evaluating Information is offered 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19; 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11; 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27; 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9; and 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. Participants learn how to use the COD Library's catalog and databases how to evaluate the best sources for research topics.

Advanced Research: Search Strategies & Techniques is offered 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, and Tuesday, Nov. 15; 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, and Thursday, Dec. 1; and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31. The Nov. 15 session will be held in SRC Room 2638. This advanced workshop teaches effective and time-saving strategies to find the best information on the internet, including Boolean logic, nesting, truncation and field searching.

Online Portfolios is offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. Participants will learn to use free online tools to create professional and accessible online portfolios.

Wikipedia: Use it? Maybe is offered 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19. This workshop provides and overview of Wikipedia with information on how to effectively use one of the Internet's most unique and valuable collections of information.

Introduction to Zotero is offered 3 to 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. Participants will learn to use this free, easy-to-use tool to collect, organize, cite and share research sources.

Delicious Social Bookmarking is offered from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1. Participants will learn more about the social bookmarking tool and how it can help keep favorite sites organized and easily accessible.

iPhone and iPad Open House is offered 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2. Participants will explore the power of mobile computing, learning how these devices link intoour busy lives.
