Guitarist Alejandro Escovedo at Harper College
A singer-songwriter whose musical styles have spanned everything from underground rock to alt-country will perform this month at Harper College.
Alejandro Escovedo will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in the College’s Performing Arts Center on Harper’s main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.
The son of Mexican immigrants, Escovedo started his career almost accidentally when he formed his first band — the punk-rock group the Nuns — after a film project flopped. He went on to cofound two ’80s bands, Rank and File and the True Believers, before settling into the Austin, Texas, scene.
“I love his deep roots and the storytelling sense that he has in his songwriting,” said Steven Vasquez, a Harper guitar instructor who also performs professionally.
“I love the fact that you can hear Southwest-style Americana mixed in with the attitude of an L.A. punk.”
Escovedo will perform songs from his latest acclaimed release, “Street Songs of Love,” during his Harper concert. Tickets are $20 for general admission. For tickets or details, call (847) 925-6100 or visit www.harpercollege.edu/boxoffice.
